Liam Enright, Glenbawn, Ballyhahill, Co. Limerick. By George Langan.

LIAM ENRIGHT , the youngest of 10 was the only one that remained single. Liam along with his brother Jim (Jimmy) were greyhound enthusiasts and had several good greyhounds that won many prizes at Tralee and Limerick greyhound tracks. I had a good chat with Liam today August 24th 2016 about his life and times growing up around Clounleharde. Liam celebrated his 91st birthday earlier this year. He told me that they won races in almost every greyhound track in Ireland. Liam vacated the old Enright homestead in Glenbawn approximately 16 yrs ago and built for himself a new home practically across the road from his niece Carol Enright Noonan. He told me of an incident that happened when he was about  16 or  years of  age that involved my grandfather Paddy Langan. My grandfather along with Jackie Scanlon from Lisreidy had been in Athea and had spent some time in several hostelries in the village and whilst on their way home they decided to have a race with their two horses, both pulling trap-car’s.  Anyway with their spirits high they took off with the race and as grandfather was getting the upper hand suddenly Jackie came up close to grandfather’s trap clipping the wheel and breaking a spoke or two in the process resulting in grandfather having to pull up. Grandfather got out of the trap and ran towards Liam who was sitting in the rear of the other trap and gave him an open blow in the mouth breaking one of his teeth, grandfather had blamed Liam for intentionally causing the interference. Of course it wasn’t Liam’s fault at all but, as I said with spirits high, these things happen. Liam said that they met some time afterwards at the fair of Ardagh where grandfather apologised, they shook hands and that was the end of that. I asked Liam why did he single him out to which Liam replied, ”I suppose I was the nearest to him”.

Liam Enright was telling me another story concerning his brother Jimmy who was in the life assurance business at the time and on one particular day had the occasion to call on my grandfather Paddy Langan. On entering the house Jimmy was greeted by Paddy as follows, ”Jimmy Enright we are now not safe sleeping in our own beds”. Apparently the aforementioned Jackie Scanlon was not long after buying a motor car and on one particular  very foggy night whilst driving by grandfathers he went off the road and struck the wall of the house knocking a huge piece of plaster down on top of Paddy in the bed. Liam Enright was buried on Sept 10th, 2022, aged 97 years,

Jackie Scanlon was a brother to Paddy Scanlon who was married to Madge Connell of Glenbawn.
