1.Patrick1 McInerney corn circa 1750 in Co. Clare who, to the best of our knowledge, married my ancestor Katherine Kate Langan. Kate was born circa 1760 and died circa 1840 at Tullyglass, Glin. Thomas F. Culhane (Lawney) has made reference to this in the book, Home Thoughts from Abroad page 95. The McInerney’s got the nickname of the ‘Brandy’ McInerney’s because of winning a prize of 5 pounds and a bottle of brandy put up by the Knight of Glin for swimming across the River Shannon from Clare to Glin. 2.Patrick2 McInerney (Patrick1) born circa 1789, Tullyglasss, Glin. Patrick died a widower on April 18th, 1879 at Tullyglass, Glin, aged 90 years, Kate McInerney Tullyglass present at his death. (There was another Patrick McInerney who died in Glin district in 1865 aged 70 years.) Patrick2 McInerney and Unknown wife had the following family of 2-
i.John3 McInerney, (Patrick2, Patrick1) born circa 1830 at Tullyglass, Glin and died there a widower sometime between 1901 and 1911. The husband and wife, Patrick & Bridget Scanlon were boarders there in the 1901 census and had taken over for the 1911 census with no trace of John. His sister-in-law Catherine McInerney who was a widow lived with him. Bridget Scanlan was John’s niece, daughter of Thomas McInerny & Katie Boyle.

ii.Thomas3 McInerney (Patrick2,Patrick1.) born circa 1840 at Tullyglass, Glin. Thomas married Katie Boyle in 1870 at Tarbert. I can’t find any record of this marriage. They had a daughter Bridget4 McInerney born at Tullyglass on Jan 17th, 1877, her sponsors being – James & Nora Donovan. On Feb 6th, 1900 at Glin church, Bridget4 married Patrick Scanlon, Kinard, Glin, born on Aug 24th, 1869, son of farmer, Patrick Scanlon, & Margaret Ahern, the witnesses being – Denis Scanlon & Mary Boyle. Family from that union as follows –
i. Mary Scanlan born 1902.

iii. Katie Scanlan born 1905.
iv. Maggie Scanlan born 1907.
v. Patrick Paddy Scanlan born at Tullyglass on March 10th, 1910. Paddy married Josie Reidy, Knockdown, Athea, Co. Limerick. Paddy & Josie had a large family. I met Josie in 2009 at St. Ita’s Hospital, Newcastle West when she was visiting her sister Nora Mulvihill, Toureendonnell, Athea, who was a patient there at the time.
3.John2 McInerney (Patrick1) born circa 1800, Tullyglass, Glin. .John married Sarah Barry from Kinard, Glin. Sara, born circa 1794 and died a widow on Dec 20th, 1870 at Tullyleague, Glin aged 76 years. Can’t find a death cert for John, we know that he died in Tullyleague, Glin before 1870. The Barry’s farmed in Kinard, Glin. One of Sarah’s sisters married Tom Pegum who owned the fisheries and an estate in Cahara. At some stage they lost the estate to the banks. It was subsequently taken over by Jimmy Stack and lastly by Joe Hogan, son of John Hogan, Kinard & Mary Liston, Knocknagorna. Joe had a quarry in Borrigone, Askeaton. Another sister of Sarah’s was married to Paddy Stackpoole at Wallace’s cross, Tullyleague whose daughter was married to Michael Meade, Chapel Rd, Glin. By all accounts the Barry’s were great singers and the tradition of music and song followed on in the Meade family.

i.Patrick3 (Paddy) McInerney (son of John2 McInerney & Sarah Barry) born circa 1819 in Ballyguiltenane, Glin married Mary Mackessy on June 11th, 1855 in Glin, the witnesses being John Wallace & Mary Moore. Something to note here, the McInerney’s had land in both Ballyguiltenane and Tullyleague, just a little stream dividing the two townlands. - Patrick4 McInerney, (son of Patrick3 (Paddy) McInerney & Mary Mackessy) born on April 1st 1856 at Tullyleague. Patrick died young as there was another Patrick born in 1869.
- Thomas4 McInerney, (son of Patrick3 (Paddy) McInerney & Mary Mackessy) born on April 17th, 1858 at Tullyleague, Glin, died circa 1930 at Tullyleague, Glin, sponsors Catherine McInerney & Pat Lynch. Thomas remained single in life and his farm was passed on to his nephew Paddy McInerney who was married to Margaret (Peg) Crowley from Knockfinnisk, Athea. In the 1911 Census Thomas spelled his name as Thomas McKinerney, was 50 years of age and head of the family. He was known locally as Tom ‘Brandy’.
- Ellen McInerney (daughter of Patrick3 (Paddy) McInerney & Mary Mackessy) born on March 10th, 1861 at Tullyleague, Glin, sponsors John & Catherine McInerney.

On Feb 19th, 1889 at Newtownsandes church, Patrick McInerney, born on Aug 1st 1869, son of farmer Patrick McInerney from Tullyleague, married Johanna Fennell, born 1867, daughter of farmer William Fennell from Glenalappa, Moyvane, Co. Kerry, the witnesses being John Connell and Mary O’Connell. Patrick McInerney died on June 15th, 1936 at Tullyleague, Glin and is buried in Kilfergus cemetery. Paddy used to go to Scotland for the Autumn picking potatoes.

John5 Patrick (Jack) McInerney (son of Patrick McInerney & Johanna Fennell) born 1891 at Tullyleague, Glin, married Mary Agnes Piggott, born on April 6th, 1893 at Knocknagoshel, Co. Kerry, daughter of Jeremiah Piggott & Catherine Hanifin. Mary died on May 8th, 1965 at White Township, New Jersey. John died on May 3rd, 1981 at St. Petersburg, Florida. Their first child died in his infancy from congenital heart condition. Mary took him back to Ireland believing the Ocean air might help him breathe. He died in Ireland as is buried in a small graveyard in Brosna, Co. Kerry quite close to where Mary grew up. Michael5 McInernry born 1893 at Tullyleague and died on Nov 26th, 1973. I think he had the nickname ‘Chucks’. He was supposed to have acquired lodgings with Bridget ‘Bridgie’ Sandes at Sande’s castle, Moyvane. He may have been exposed to Mustard Gas during World War 1.
Mary5 Mollie McInerney (daughter of Patrick McInerney & Johanna Fennell) born 1894 -1961. Mary married Paddy Flavin, Glenagragra. (See Paddy Flavin towards end of blog)
Ellie5 Ellen McInerney (daughter of Patrick McInerney & Johanna Fennell) born 1896. Emigrated to the U.S. and married Thomas Kenerick. Family as follows – Josephine, Thomas, Cornelius and Mary Kenrick.
Bridget5 McInerney (daughter of Patrick McInerney & Johanna Fennell) born 1898 at Tullyleague, Glin. Bridget emigrated to the U.S. and married Polander. Bridget died circa 1935 leaving a large family behind her.

Sarah5 McInerney (daughter of Patrick McInerney & Johanna Fennell) born 1901. Sarah emigrated to the U.S. and married John Holland. Family as follows – Daniel, Josephine & John Holland.
Patrick5 Paddy McInerney (son of Patrick McInerney & Johanna Fennell) born 1903. On April 2nd, 1940 at Athea church, Patrick McInerney, son of labourer Patrick McInerney, married Margaret (Peg) Crowley from Knockfinnisk, Athea, daughter of Daniel Crowley, the witnesses being – John McInerney & Mary Crowley. Paddy inherited his uncle Tom’s farm in Tullyleague. He worked part-time as the local postman. He died on Jan 5th, 1989. Paddy’s nephew John McInerney bought the farm following the passing of Paddy and Peg. Paddy & Peg had a family of 4, one son and three daughters.
William5 (Bill) McInerney (son of Patrick McInerney & Johanna Fennell) born 1906, married Nora Stack from Turraree, Glin. William died on Aug 13th, 1985. Nora died on Sept 6th, 1997. Family of 6, 3 boys and 3 girls. One of the sons Private McInerney born circa 19.. married Private Keane from Listowel and had a family of 5.
Catherine5 Katie McInerney (daughter of Patrick McInerney & Johanna Fennell) born 1908. Catherine married in Glin to Michael O’Donnell from Shanagolden. Catherine died on Feb 4th, 1949.
James5 Jimmy McInerney (son of Patrick McInerney & Johanna Fennell) born 1911 at Tullyleague, died at Camden, London on Oct 3rd, 1985.

ii.John3McInerney (son of John2 McInerney & Sarah Barry) born circa 1830 at Ballyguiltenane/Tullyleague. At Loughill church in 1862 John married Margaret O’Shea, daughter of David O’Shea & Mary Wingle, the witnesses being – David O’Shea & Mary Shaughnessy. David O’Shea, who was born circa 1799, moved to Dromreask, Glin and died there on Feb 13th, 1883 aged 84 years. His wife, Mary Wingle, was from Knockfinnisk, Athea, was born circa 1817 and died at Dromreask, Glin in 1893 aged 76 years. Margaret O’Shea was born in Loughill circa 1839 and died a widow at Ballyguiltenane on April 7th, 1921, aged 82 years, her daughter in law Mary McInerney, Ballyguiltenane present at her death. Can’t find a death cert for her husband John McInerney. What we know is he died sometime between 1882 and 1901. Following her husband’s death, Margaret carried on farming and had a butter collection station where neighbours brought their butter to be weighed before going to the market. The 1901 Census reads as follows –

ii. Catherine4 McInerney, (daughter of John3 McInerney & Margaret O’Shea) born April 6th, 1867 at Ballyguiltenane, baptismal sponsors – Michael & Kitty O’Shea.
iii. Jack4 McInerney, (son of John3 McInerney & Margaret O’Shea) born on Aug 11th, 1869 at Ballyguiltenane, baptismal sponsors Thomas McInerney & Liz O’Shea. Jack contracted pneumonia and died as a result on April 27th, 1921 aged 53 years, Mary McInerney, his sister-in-law from Ballyguiltenane present at his death.
iv. Michael4 Mick McInerney, (son of John3 McInerney & Margaret O’Shea) born on March 22nd, 1871 at Ballyguiltenane, baptismal sponsors – Mick O’Shea & Margaret Mullane. Mick who was known as ‘Sixteen’ went to the U.S. on the Oceanic from Queenstown, arriving at New York port on April 11th, 1900. He returned sometime later and worked locally. When he was a toddler, he fell into the nearby stream during a big flood and was washed up a mile downstream. Mick O’Shea & Margaret Mullane were husband and wife, Mick being the son of David O’Shea & Mary Wingle and Margaret being the daughter of Denis Mullane & Johanna Scanlon, Dirreen, Athea.
v. Sara4 McInerney, (daughter of John3 McInerney & Margaret O’Shea) born on April 5th, 1873 at Ballyguiltenane, her baptismal sponsors – David O’Shea & Mary Wingle. Some of her relations, the Co Clare McInerney’s took her back to Clare and sent her to college. She became a school teacher and emigrated to the U.S.
vi. Patrick4 (Paddy) McInerney, (son of John3 McInerney & Margaret O’Shea) born on April 21st, 1875 at Ballyguiltenane, his baptismal sponsors – Richard & Johanna Walsh. Paddy emigrated to the U.S and became a recluse following the breakup of his marriage. He wasn’t heard from since.
vii. Dave4 McInerney, (son of John3 McInerney & Margaret O’Shea) born on July 14th, 1877, sponsors being – David O’Shea & Mary Wingle. Dave emigrated to the U.S., returned to take over the family place. On Feb 6th, 1908 at Glin church Dave McInerney married Mary Scanlon, Ballyguiltenane, daughter of Patrick Scanlon, the witnesses being – Michael O’Donoghue & Bridget Morgan. Dave died circa 1972, his wife Mary died circa 1965. Family from that union as follows –

Paddy McInerney. (son of Dave McInerney & Mary Scanlon) Born on June 29th, 1914 at Ballyguiltenane. Paddy McInerney married my aunt Maureen Langan, daughter of Paddy Langan & Babe Fitzpatrick, Glenagragra and went to live at South Mall, Glin. They had one daughter Private McInerney , born 19–.
Dave McInerney, (son of Dave McInerney & Mary Scanlon) born on Feb 19th, 1916 at Ballyguiltenane. Dave married Kitty McMahon, Ballinamadough, Glin and went to live there. One daughter Private McInerney born circa 19–., who married Private Culhane, Turraree Cross, Glin, son of Jim Culhane.
viii. Margaret4 McInerney, (daughter of John3 McInerney & Margaret O’Shea) born on April 21st, 1880. Margaret emigrated to the U.S and married there to a McKenna from Co. Monaghan.
ix. Lizzie4 McInerney, (daughter of John3 McInerney & Margaret O’Shea) born on June 17th, 1882 at Ballinagoul, Glin. On Oct 10th, 1903 Lizzie married Jack J. Wallace, born Oct 12th, 1878 atTullyleague, son of Johnny Wallace, Tullyleague and Margaret Costelloe, Tenakilla, Ballyhahill, the witnesses being, James Wallace & Margaret Cregan. John J. Wallace died on March 20, 1958. Lizzie used to play the concertina. Paddy Flavin must have brought the music from the McInerney’s as he also played concertina. Lizzie died on Feb 28th, 1979 at Tullyleague, Glin. Family from that union as follows –
i. Maggie Wallace born circa 1904. Maggie emigrated to the U.S. and married Thomas Lynskey from Co. Galway circa 1929. Maggied died circa 1964. Family as follows – Thomas, Betty, Joan & Joseph Lynskey.
ii. Lily Wallace born circa 1906. Lily emigrated to the U.S where she married Mike Heaphey from Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. Lily died circa 1992. Family as follows – Tommy, John, Michael & Elizabeth Heaphey.
iii. Mary Wallace born circa 1908. Mary emigrated to the U.S where she married Tim Hartnett from Kenmare, Co. Kerry. Mary died in 1939. Family as follows – Lillian & Joan Hartnett.
iv. Josie Wallace born circa 1911. Josie got married in Glin circa 1937 to Con Fleming from Killarney, Co. Kerry. Con & Josie lived in Dublin and had two children – Paddy & Lily Fleming.
v. Johnny Wallace born on June 18th, 1914. Johnny got married in 1941 to Ellen Brassil from Tarmons, Tarbert, Co. Kerry and had a family of 7, one of whom Sean Wallace was in my class in Ballyguiltenane National School. I’ve kept in contact with Sean throughout the years.
vi. Ellen Wallace born circa 1817. Ellen married Jimmy Lynam from Clonsilla, Dublin circa 1943 in Glin and had a family of 6, one boy and three girls.
Marriage of Johnny Wallace & Margaret Costelloe as follows – Johnny aged 29 years, son of John Wallace and Margaret aged 22 years, daughter of ? Costelloe were married on Feb 14th, 1874 at Glin church, the witnesses being, Michael Costelloe & John Wallace.
iii.Thomas3 McInerney (son of John2 McInerney & Sarah Barry) born circa 1849. On Feb 4th, 1879 at Shanagolden church, Thomas McInerney, aged 30 years, married Catherine (Katie) Bourke from Shanid, Shanagolden, daughter of farmer Thomas Bourke, deceased, the witnesses being – Philip Bourke & Mary Kelly.

Ellena4 Mary McInerney, born on Dec 5th, 1879 at Ballyguiltenane, Glin, Ellen McElligott present at the birth.
Sean Wallace tells me that they never heard of Thomas3 McInerney until the above records were found. He may have emigrated or went to live in Shanagolden in his wife’s place. No record of any other children born to Thomas & Catherine.
4.Thomas2 McInerney, (Patrick1) born circa 1800, Tullyglass, Glin. Thomas married a Mary Enright born circa 1815 and had a family of at least 8 children. Thomas, Mary and family emigrated to the U.S. circa 1864. Thomas & Mary are buried in St. Munchins Cemetery, Cameron, Missouri, U.S.A. Thomas died on Feb 21st 1882. Family as follows – N.B. name change to McNerney following emigrating to the U.S..
i. Patrick3 McInerney (Thomas2, Patrick1) born Dec 25th, 1835. On Oct 22nd, 1864 at Glin church, Patrick married Ellen Curnane, daughter of Patrick Curnane & Johanna Barrett, the witnesses being – John Enright & Mary Sheahan. Patrick & Ellen emigrated between 1865 and 1869 as they had a daughter Mary McInerney born on Oct, 7th, 1865 at Kinard, Glin, the remainder of the family born in the U.S. Patrick McNerney died on June 19th, 1915 at Zanesville, Muskingum, Ohio. The name Curnane also spelled Cournane and known as Courtney in some instances. Patrick McInerney & Ellen Curnane had the following family –
i. Mary3 McInerney, born on Oct, 7th, 1865 at Kinard, Glin, Mary emigrated with her family, joined the nuns and became Sr. Monica. She died on March 2nd, 1953 at Villa Maria, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.
ii. Joanna McNerney, born on March 7th, 1869, died Feb 13th, 1960 at Zanesville.
iii. Thomas James McNerney born on April 20th, 1873, Ellenwood, New York, died on Aug 21st, 1956, Zanesville.
iv. Ellen Theresa McNerney born on March 5th, 1875, Calison, New York. Ellen also joined the nuns and died on Oct 19th, 1971 at Villa Maria, PA.
v. Bridget McNerney, born on April, 1876 and died on Jan 5th, 1905, Zanesville.
vi. Margaret McNerney, born on Aug 1879, died on Jan 13th, 1904 at Zanesville.

ii.Mary McNerney, (Thomas2, Patrick1) born on March 17th, 1839. Mary married a Thomas McNerney, aka Tom ‘Brandy’ from Co. Clare of no relation. Had a family of 12.
iii. Timothy McNerney (Thomas2, Patrick1) born on Aug, 1843 and died on Feb 7th, 1929, Kansas City, Jackson, Mo. Timothy was a railroad contractor. Married Mary Bennett, born Sept 1843 in Ireland. Family of 4 daughters and 3 sons. One of the daughters married William Malone and another daughter married Cornelius C. Sheahan. With a name spelling as such, Cornelius had to be from either west Limerick or north Kerry.
iv. Bridget McNerney (Thomas2, Patrick1) born 1845, died on Aug 27th, 1893, Seattle, King, WA. Married William Murphy, in New York.
v. Margaret McNerney (Thomas2, Patrick1) born 1848, died 1911 at Pittsburg, Crawford, Kansas. Margaret married Thomas Murphy in New York, born 1851 in Ireland. The entire family were wiped out with tuberculosis except for one son Patrick Murphy, born 1875.
vi. Thomas McNerney (Thomas2, Patrick1) born on March 1st, 1852 at Kinard, Glin, died Jan 2nd, 1932, Horton, Brown, Kansas. Thomas, who worked on the railroad, married Delia Garvey in Unadilla, New York on Oct 22nd, 1874. Had a family of 4, two sons and two daughters.
vii. John McNerney (Thomas2, Patrick1) born on July 15th, 1854 at Kinard, Glin and died on Jan 31st, 1950 in Seattle. He married Elizabeth Bridget Heffernon in 1879. Had a family of 7, four sons and three daughters.
viii. Michael McNerney (Thomas2, Patrick1) born on April 2nd, 1859 at Kinard, Glin, died on Sept 5th, 1949, Kansas City, Jackson, MO. Michael married Mary Elizabeth O’Shaughnessy on July 3rd, 1889 in Kansas City. Worked on the Erie Canal and on the railroad. Had a family of 10, five daughters and five sons.
