We have Timothy Flaherty born circa1867. On Feb 14th, 1889 at Athea church this Timothy Flaherty aged 22 years, a labourer, son of John Flaherty, Knockfinnisk, Athea, married Johanna King aged 22 years, daughter of labourer P.K. Margaret (Peg) Connell nee Griffin (daughter of Patrick (Patsy) Griffin and Mary Barrett) was born on Feb 15th, 1899. On June 24th, 1925 at Glin church, Margaret married Maurice O’Connell son of Patrick O’Connell, Glensharrold, the witnesses being Martin O’Connell and Bella Taylor. Maurice was a creamery manager in Ardagh. They had a son and two daughters as follows – Patrick O’Connell who emigrated to England, lives in Birmingham and two daughters one of whom was Kathleen O’Connell who joined the nuns. The other daughter Moira O’Connell 1935-2009 married Mathew Broderick in Duagh, Co. Kerry. Moira attended Carrickerry National School and Convent of Mercy Secondary School, Newcastle West. She worked for Paddy McCormack’s Joinery Firm in Ardagh where she met her husband the aforementioned Matt Broderick. They married in 1956 and moved to Duagh, Co Kerry where they raised a family of five – Three daughters and two sons.  Around 1989 she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis but fought her illness bravely and courageously. Moira died in February 2009 was laid to rest in Springmount Cemetery Duagh.  She was predeceased by her husband Matt in 2000.

As already stated, Paddy Faley and I had the pleasure of paying Margaret (Peg) Griffin O’Connell a visit back in 1992. Her daughter Sr. Kathleen was there that day, she having taken leave of absence from her post in Mexico to come home and look after her mother.  She is now in her 90″s and she’s back in Mexico and celebrating 70yrs as a nun this year 2017. Jacqui Geoghegan Mangan, Glensharrold has been telling me that  Maurice O’Connell and her grandmother Margaret Geoghegan nee Aherne (married to Joe Aherne) were second cousins. Her grandmother’s uncle Master John O’Connell gave Maurice O’Connell’s father that site (pictured above) when he returned from America. They were first cousins to Jacqui’s great grandmother Bridget O’Connell (sister to master John O’Connell) was also his first cousin. Master John O’Connell taught at Carrickerry National School and was the father of the renowned poet and writer Eithne Strong. John O’Connell was married to Kathleen Lennon from Limerick city who was also a school teacher. Eithne Connell Strong 1923-1999 FOR MORE ON EITHNE STRONG See –Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Morgan Enright  born  circa 1838.  Morgan   was a blacksmith who had his smithy on the old Tullyleague road close to what is known locally as the ‘limestone cross’.  Apparently, the old Tullyleague road went straight on in direction back then just above the said cross at the left-hand bend.  Farmers drawing limestone to their limekilns would drop off half their load at the cross before climbing the hill hence how it got the name ‘limestone cross’. This Morgan Enright married   Kate Hegarty   in 1864   and   had a son John Enright born Dec 4th 1864 and possibly had more children.
John Enright married twice – his first wife was   Brigid Woods as number (7) above.  They had the following two children – Morgan Enright  born Sept 10th 1905   and Patrick Enright   born March 17th 1907.  Brigid Woods died  1907  but we have no record of  her  death, it  could  have  been during  childbirth.

Anyway their son Morgan Enright  married Brigid Bourke on July 5th 1931  in St Josephs Church  Limerick. Brigid was from Glin the  daughter of William Bourke a  Blacksmith. William was married twice, one of his wife’s was a girl of the ‘widow’ Culhane’s from Ballyguiltenane, Glin and the other wife was one of the Connell’s, blacksmith’s in Glin town. Morgan  worked as a Car  Driver  with Mick Adams  driving the  Mail Car Van.  They  had  several children  as follows –  Billy, Johnny and Morgan and seven daughters – Bridie, Maura, Nora, Anna, Eileen, Margaret and Johanna.  The  last  one in Glin was Johnny  Enright   known as Johnny Morgan  who  died Feb 12th 2012 . He lived in  Church St and  worked at  various  labouring  jobs  around Glin  including  grave  digging etc . His  funeral was a quiet affair and  the bereaved names  were not  mentioned in the  death  notice on R.I.P .ie . Billy went to England for a time but returned to Glin where he died almost 20 years ago. Morgan went to England and died there as did Maura. Anna-May married a man from Ballybunion and they are now living in Co. Offaly. Herself and her husband pay a visit to Ballybunion every year and Anna calls to John Barrett, publican in Glin, they are great friends since the time she was living in Glin. Margaret married a man by the name of McKnight and they live in Askeaton, Co. Limerick. Eileen is in England along with her sister Johanna (Josephine) who is the youngest of the family. As far as I know Nora died somewhere in England.

Their other son Patrick Enright married  Catherine (Kitty) McMahon   from Glenagragra Upper . She  was distantly  related to  him  through the Woods/Quill line as follows.  Brigid Woods married John McMahon, Glenagragra whose father was also called John. John and Brigid had 3 daughters in family –  May McMahon,Catherine (Kitty) McMahon (see next paragraph) & Nancy McMahon.May & Nancy got married on the same day in 1933. May married Paddy Hanrahan from Foynes. Her  sister  Nancy married her neighbour John  Dalton,  Glenagragra. John married in there. John & Nancy had two sons  John and Jimmy Dalton and two daughters Josie and Mary. John jnr fell victim to the polio outbreak of the 1950’s and went to his eternal reward March 25th 1991 at the age of 44yrs. Josie married Paddy Wilmott in Askeaton. Mary married to a Boyle in Co. Mayo. Jimmy is alive and well today in the home place. John Dalton snr. died in 1974, his wife Nancy died in 1981.

As stated above Patrick Enright  married, Catherine (Kitty) McMahon and they had  2 boys namely –   John Enright and Patrick Enright, I knew them both. Patrick was a member of the Garda and was a Sgt in the training centre in Templemore when I joined in 1972.  We used to draw turf down to John they lived at the east of Glin towards Cahara just off the Mail Road. This was. around the years 1969/1971. Mossie Langan and myself were into the motor bikes back then and i remember Mossie getting a BSA off John.

John Enright’s  2nd  wife  was Margaret  Brandon  married on Jan 11th 1908, the daughter of Timmy Brandon a harness maker who  lived  in a cottage in Kilfergus near Dr. Barrett’s . Margaret  was in her late  thirties  or early forties  by then . They  had  3 children one of  whom  died in infancy, the  children that survived were Kate Enright  born 29 August 1909 and  Brigid Enright  born 11 Jan 1911.

(7)Patrick Lynch (son of James) was baptised in Athea church on August 4th 1892 his sponsors being – John Aherne and Margaret Lynch. Patrick entered the order of the De La Salle Brothers at Castletown Retreat, Castletown, Co. Laois. He worked in India/China for many years before returning to Ireland in ill health. He came on holidays to Glasha circa 1946 to his brother George and to Ballyguiltenane to his sister Maggie. They were absolutely shocked at the sight of him it being quite apparent that not alone was the man seriously ill but was also on the brink of starvation. George and Maggie fed him the best of food during his stay sending him back to Castletown in far better condition than when he arrived. It did not say much for the food and shelter at Castletown. When he was in Glasha he loved going around visiting the neighbours and relations. On one particular evening, he had the occasion to visit his neighbour Mary Dalton who was married to Jack ‘George’ Griffin in Glenagragra. He asked my mother and her friend Peggy Dalton to accompany him up to Griffin’s not knowing that the two girls had dates with Jack Feury and Pat ‘Carty’ Enright respectively that same evening. As faith might have it the meeting place for the date was at the shortcut entrance to the Griffin home, a pathway over the ditch, that was located at the turn of what was known back then and still is known today as the ‘new road’. The official right of way to the farmhouse was down by Dan O’Connor’s estate, formally Billy Griffin’s. Not wanting to give the game away to Bro. Hugh, the two boys hid inside the opposite ditch ‘till the travelling party had passed by. After spending an hour or so at Griffin’s the three started out on the journey back home and on arriving at the ditch they found their exit blocked by a furze bush that had been laid across their path. Says Bro. Hugh, ‘my God what’s going on here’ as the stones and divots came raining down on top of them from the far side of the road with the two girls fit to explode in their attempt to keep in the laughing. I can tell you that it wasn’t long ‘till Hugh became wise to what was going on and being the diplomatic person that he was, he never let on a word.A year or so afterwards, Bro. Hugh’s condition deteriorated and it seems that Glasha was kept in the dark so to speak with nobody being kept up to date as to the state of his health until a note arrived informing them that he was dead.  Many years afterwards, realising that they had a broken bridge to mend, a De-La- Salle Bro. who apparently knew Bro. Hugh quite well, paid a visit to my mother and her sister Joan but I’m afraid at that stage it was too little too late. Bro. Hugh died on May 8th 1947 and is buried in Castletown, Co. Laois.

Michael5 Mick Feury & Catherine Normile had the following family:

    (i) Thomas Michael6 ‘Buddy’, Feury  (son of Michael5 Mick Feury & Catherine Normile) b. 1909 and died October 26th 1993 at St. Ita’s Hospital, Newcastle West. Thomas married Ellen Liston, Dirreen, b. circa 1912 and died at Glenagragra, October 15th 1989. Both interred at Kilfergus Cemetery, Glin.

Mikie Kinnane, Glenagragra/Scort was telling me that Buddy and Mikie’s mother Kate O’Donnell were 2nd cousins. The O’Donnells came from Park, Clounleharde/Kilcoleman and later went to live at Ballycormack/Knocknaboula. (Buddy’s grandmother was Joan O’Donnell)

Michael O’Donnell, a descendant of the above was married to Mary Kilmartin from Rooskagh. This was Michael’s second marriage having previously wed Catherine McInerney daughter of Paddy McInerney & Nora Fennell from Tullyleague. Michael O’Donnell and Mary Kilmartin lived on the Ardagh road just outside Newcastle West. Mary had three brothers – Mikie, Patie & Johnny Kilmartin. My wife Vera new all the Kilmartin’s very well. Mikie Kilmartin was the only one of the brothers to marry. He married Mary Sheahan and had the following family: John, Morgan, Bill, Mickey, Mary, Nora, Ann, Peg & Eileen Kilmartin.

The old Feury homestead stood immediately to the rear of the present house. I remember it well, it had mud walls and there was a large crack on its eastern gable-end, it having been struck by lightning many years earlier. Buddy Feury inherited the music and song from his forebears and won many medals and trophies at several Fleadh Cheoil’s. He had what was known as the Sliabh Luacra style of playing although he used to say he brought the music from Clare. He got much of his tutorship from Hannie Long of Turraree.

I remember well an occasion circa 1970, when I was detailed to go drawing out ‘dung’ (farmyard manure) for Buddy or Buddy as he was affectionately known. The ‘dung’ had to be loaded onto the trailer with pitch forks, no mechanical means back then, and by mid-day I had my fill of it. No sooner had we the dinner ate than I turned to Buddy, who was seated at the top of the table and said -: forget the shit Buddy, take down the fiddle and give us one blast of ‘’The Mountain Road’’. His good wife Nell R.I.P. turned ‘round, looked at her husband and said -: ‘’Jesus Bud’ did you ever hear the like of it and we having men hired for the day’’. I think Buddy and myself were two of a kind for not alone did he adhere to my request but played not one, but several tunes that same afternoon in his own inimitable style. Of course I never did believe in ‘all work and no play’ and still don’t.

Buddy Feury was telling me of an incident that happened a few years before my grandaunt Margaret Langan Higgins died. Word was sent to him to call on Margaret when ever he’d get a chance and to bring the fiddle with him. Buddy assumed that she must have had some musician visitor staying with her and that this person wanted to play a few tunes. Anyway he arrived at the house with fiddle under his arm to find nobody there except Margaret herself. ‘Did you bring it?’ asked Margaret. ‘I did’, replied Buddy, ‘but who’s going to play?’. ‘I am’ says she and with that she took up the fiddle and proceeded to play a blast of a tune leaving Buddy standing spellbound in the middle of the floor. It was only at that point and time he reliased she could play. I said to Buddy, ‘I suppose it was a blast of ‘Fr. Halpin’s Topcoat’ that she gave you’. He looked at me and in a whisper replied, ‘Bunker Hill’. Moreover, as all music lovers will know ‘Bunker Hill’ is a very tricky three-part reel.

Buddy came 1st in fiddle competition at Athea Fleadh Cheoil on May 8th 1983. 1st place duet with his neighbour Donie Lyons (flute), Athea Fleadh Cheoil, May 20th 1984. He won the Padraig O’Caoimh cup in Scartaglen in 1988. Took honours in the duet competition at Glin Fleadh 1988, once again teaming up with his neighbour Donie Lyons who was on concert flute.

Buddy was great friends with Padraig O’Cearbhaill (Carroll) from Glin. Padraig was principal at the vocational school in Abbeyfeale during my day’s going there, 1965/68. and Buddy told many a story of their journeys to competitions and wren parties together. As already stated, Buddy was a renowned fiddle-player and won numerous medals at competitions throughout west Limerick and north Kerry. Buddy won his first Munster trophy at Foynes in 1941 in a competition organised by Padraig among others. The two cycled to Foynes on that Sunday and as faith might have it Buddy got a puncture passing Mount Trenchard and with no kit to mend it, he continued his journey and back again to Glin, cycling on the rim, destroying both tube and tyre in the process.

On another occasion Padraig was teaching Irish classes in Athea and Buddy cycled in to meet him and to have a few drinks afterwards. It so happened that there was a wren dance that same night at Maurice (Mosseen) O’Connor’s in Ballygoughlin and the two of them on their bicycles, headed for the party, Buddy having the fiddle with him in Athea. They started out for home the following morning and Padraig said he’d accompany Buddy as far as Ballyguiltenane cross. Just as they were about to mount their bicycles, who did they see arriving on horseback from the direction of Ballygoughlin Schoolhouse, only the curate from Glin. Dances as such were strictly forbidden at that time by the Catholic church. Without a word, Buddy hopped on his bicycle and left Padraig to deal with the wrath of the priest. ‘Is that Feury off there’ said the curate to Padraig, he knew well what was going on. Indeed, Padraig wasn’t one bit concerned or unsettled by the priest’s arrival.

LIAM ENRIGHT , the youngest of 10 was the only one that remained single. Liam along with his brother Jim (Jimmy) were greyhound enthusiasts and had several good greyhounds that won many prizes at Tralee and Limerick greyhound tracks. I had a good chat with Liam today August 24th 2016 about his life and times growing up around Clounleharde. Liam celebrated his 91st birthday earlier this year. He told me that they won races in almost every greyhound track in Ireland. Liam vacated the old Enright homestead in Glenbawn approximately 16 yrs ago and built for himself a new home practically across the road from his niece Carol Enright Noonan. He told me of an incident that happened when he was about  16 or  years of  age that involved my grandfather Paddy Langan. My grandfather along with Jackie Scanlon from Lisreidy had been in Athea and had spent some time in several hostelries in the village and whilst on their way home they decided to have a race with their two horses, both pulling trap-car’s.  Anyway with their spirits high they took off with the race and as grandfather was getting the upper hand suddenly Jackie came up close to grandfather’s trap clipping the wheel and breaking a spoke or two in the process resulting in grandfather having to pull up. Grandfather got out of the trap and ran towards Liam who was sitting in the rear of the other trap and gave him an open blow in the mouth breaking one of his teeth, grandfather had blamed Liam for intentionally causing the interference. Of course it wasn’t Liam’s fault at all but, as I said with spirits high, these things happen. Liam said that they met some time afterwards at the fair of Ardagh where grandfather apologised, they shook hands and that was the end of that. I asked Liam why did he single him out to which Liam replied, ”I suppose I was the nearest to him”.

Liam Enright was telling me another story concerning his brother Jimmy who was in the life assurance business at the time and on one particular day had the occasion to call on my grandfather Paddy Langan. On entering the house Jimmy was greeted by Paddy as follows, ”Jimmy Enright we are now not safe sleeping in our own beds”. Apparently the aforementioned Jackie Scanlon was not long after buying a motor car and on one particular  very foggy night whilst driving by grandfathers he went off the road and struck the wall of the house knocking a huge piece of plaster down on top of Paddy in the bed. Liam Enright was buried on Sept 10th, 2022, aged 97 years,

Jackie Scanlon was a brother to Paddy Scanlon who was married to Madge Connell of Glenbawn.
