Catherine4 (Kate) O’Connell born in Scort on April 4th, 1881 – 1954 (Scort which is the local name for that part of Glenagragra and is listed as such on the marriage cert) daughter of Patrick Connell. Catherine married on November 15th, 1902 to a John (Jack) Ahern 1880-1955 from Dirreen, Athea, son of Patrick (Patsy) Ahern, farmer and Julia O’Sullivan. The witnesses for the wedding were John Mullane and Mary Connors. (Patsy Ahern was from Knockfinnisk, Athea, married into the O’Sullivan farm in Dirreen). Catherine gave birth to twins Mary Ahern & Julia Ahern on  November 19th, 1902 at Dromreask, Glin, informant was Patrick Connell, occupier. Mary was born at 2pm and Julie was born at 2.30pm. (Scort & Dromreask are adjoining townlands, registrar may have mixed up the two townlands)   Julia died on Feb 17th, 1903 at Scort, Glin, cause, debility from birth, 3 months, no medical attendant; her mother Kate present at her death.  It is thought that John may have been to the US in 1895 before returning to Ireland sometime around 1901. John is thought to have gone back to the US sometime after the birth of the twins. John was a policeman for the City of New Haven  According to the Ellis Island records Catherine went to the US to her husband John (Jack) Ahern in New Haven, Connecticut for the first time in 1904. Catherine left her daughter Mary to live with her grandparents Patrick & Mary Connell in Glenagragra and is recorded on the 1911 census as a boarder. The 1910 US Census records that John and Catherine are married 8 years (1902) and have one son John Ahern born in 1905. Catherine’s brother, Daniel O’Connell is living with them. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MK2V-HW9 On May 1st, 1914, Catherine and John returned to New York on the SS Adriatic with three children William Ahern, Catherine Ahern & Cornelius Ahern. John  is recorded as a general labourer. Kate must have returned to Ireland as she is recorded on the manifest ( I haven’t got the year suffice to say it must be 1916) that she is travelling with her daughter Christine Ahern aged 14 years old. Kate is claiming U.S Citizenship and Christine is recorded as U.S born.  In the 1930 Census Mary Ahern has emigrated to the US and is living with her parents in New Haven.  The census states that Mary was born in Connecticut but in fact she was born in Ireland as follows – Mary Ahern b 11/2/1902 in  Glenagragra, Co.Limerick.  married Thomas J. Keegan.  Thomas was born circa 1903, died on Jan 11th, 1965, North Branford, New Haven, Connecticut, United States  aged 62 years. Mary died on Aug 27th, 1976 at North Branford, Connecticut, aged 73 years.

Family in full as follows –

Mary Ahern born on  November 19th, 1902 as listed above.

John Patrick Ahern born 18 September 1905 in New Haven and died 18 May 1987 in Middleton, Connecticut aged 81 years. According to his death certificate he never married and was never employed. According to the 1920 census he was a salesman, dry goods store.

James Ahern, born on Mar 23rd, 1907 – New Haven,  Connecticut, died Jun 17th, 1984 – Wallingford, New Haven, Connecticut. James was an auto parts salesman  James married Penny Lenore.

William Ahern, born on September 19th, 1909, married Marie Mellilo.

Catherine Ahern, born on March 4th, 1911, died Aug 9th, 1996, aged 86 years, married Norman Reid. Catherine worked as a switchboard operator for Seamless Rubber Company.

Daniel Ahern,  born 1912, died Jan 2nd, 2001 aged 88 years, married.  Helen Wilson. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VZPW-RZ1

Cornelius Ahern b.10 February 1913  who is on the Ellis Island manifest in 1914.

Thomas Ahern b. 1914, died May 25th, 1987 aged 73 years, worked as a Tyre marker at Armstrong Rubber Co. buried at Saint Mary’s Cemetery Portland, Middlesex County, Connecticut, USA.  Thomas remained single in life.

Rita Ahern 1916-2001, registered nurse in WWIl,  never married. Rita was born on July 3rd, 1916 and died at Connecticut on Dec 27th, 2001, aged 85 years, buried in West Haven cemetery. Resided at Simsbury, Connecticut.

Vincent Joseph  “Duke” Ahern 1918 – 2005, married Teresa Mary Murphy. born Aug 1st, 1918 and died on Oct 23rd, 2007 aged 89 years. Vincent was born on Feb 6th, 1918 at new Haven and died on May 13th, 2005 at Branford, New Haven aged aged 87 years, buried at St. Agnes Cemetery, Branford.  ‘Vincent spent 25 years at Brock Hall Dairy in Hamden, investigator for Connecticut State Welfare Dept. Established Ahern Realty in Branford’. My thanks to Kathleen Doczy, Orland Park, Illinois for that piece of information.

Anna Ahern born Oct 11th, 1919, died Sept 27th, 2003 at Branford, Connecticut aged 84 years and buried at West Hacen cemetery. Married Andrew Koloski. born Aug 24th, 1920 at Connecticut and died at Branford on Feb 18th, 1998 aged 77 years.

Timothy J. Ahern, born on April 21st 1922 and died at Branford, New Haven on Nov 28th, 1990. Occupation, Fireman at New Haven. I have Timothy as a  Major General Timothy I.   US Army WWll.    who married Kathryn Teague.

They lost at least  2 other children in infancy.  Possibly  Elizabeth Ahern and Edward (Teddy) Ahern.

(Mike Connolly, George Langan, Patrick N.O’Neill,  Kathleen Doczy & Gerardine Walsh Chapman)

    More on the Ahern family.

Patrick (Patsy) Ahern from Knockfinnisk, Athea married Julia O’Sullivan from Dirreen, Athea. Family from that union as follows –

Michael Ahern, John Ahern, (as in above article married to Catherine (Kate) O’Connell) Mary C. Ahern, Nellie Ahern, Margaret Ahern, Catherine Ahern, Anne Ahern, Patrick Ahern (who died as a baby),  Stephen Ahern, James Ahern, William Ahern, Patrick ”The Jobber” Ahern (second Patrick to be born) Julie Ahern, Ann Ahern & Bridget Ahern. See also hereunder –

Julie Sullivan, daughter of Sean Tadhg Sullivan inherited the home place in Dirreen and on April 30th, 1876 at the age of 18 years, at Athea church, married Patrick (Patsy) Ahern aged 25 years from Knockfinisk, Athea, son of Michael Ahern, farmer. The witnesses for the wedding were James Ahern and Mary O’Sullivan. (Mary must have been her sister) They had 14 children and I believe most of them emigrated. Patsy was killed in the quarry below the house, it seems he was raising stones when the stripping of the quarry came lose and fell on top of him. Patsy and his father-in-law, Sean Tadhg never got on and on the day of his death one of the neighbours who found him asked Sean to convey the news to his wife Julie and to break it to her gently. Sean went up and stuck his head in over the half-door and says – ‘Patsy is stone dead below in the quarry with half of Ireland down on top of him’, so much for breaking it gently.

Bridget Ahern, daughter of Patrick & Julie married locally to John (Jack) Ahern from Dirreen (Lug Road), don’t know if they were related or not. The wedding took place in Athea on Sept 3rd, 1922, the witnesses were James Ahern and Annie Shanahan. Jack’s father given as John Ahern. Maudie Ahern, Lug, was a sister to Jack. Jack and Bridget lived in Glasha for a time in a cottage across the road from Thady Sullivan which is now Scanlon’s. The cottage was built by Con Shaughnessy, who lived there for awhile before moving to another cottage in Knockdown. Tom Scanlon bought the house from Jack. Jack and his wife Bridget ‘Bridgie’ Aherne went to live in Killarney. Bridgie was a sister to Paddy ‘The Jobber’ Aherne in Dirreen. Lately, I’ve been told that Jack & Bridgie emigrated to America. They had one son John Aherne whom they left behind when they emigrated. John, who was reared by his aunt Maudie and uncle Thady in Lug, died tragically when he was in his early twenties. Jack & Bridgie had other children born in the U.S. At some stage or other Jack & Bridget returned from the U.S. as he died on April 21st, 1973 and is buried in Templeathea, address given as Park Rd, Killarney, Co. Kerry. His wife Bridget died on March 6th, 1979. Jack had been a member of the R.I.C. prior to emigrating. (In places the name of this family is spelt Ahern)

Margaret Maigue Ahern, daughter of Patrick & Julie married Joe Vaughan Dirreen and they lived there at the bounds of Co. Limerick and Co. Kerry.

     Epitaph reads as follows.

In loving memory of John Ahern.

Park Rd, Killarney. Late of Athea.

    Died April 21, 1979.

Bridget Ahern died March 6th, 1973.

Sheila Ahern died Oct 13th, 1945.

Margaret Ahern died June 30th, 1990.

    His brother Timothy (Thade) Ahern,

    Athea,

    Died 1 July 1966.

    R.I.P.

Erected by his wife and family.

Hannah Ahern, daughter of Patrick & Julie married Jim Ahern, Lug. Jim was a brother to Maudie, Jack etc and became the parents of Rev Fr. John Ahern.

    Rev Fr. John Ahern.

Another daughter, Mary C. Ahern, married Patrick Shanahan (b. Aug 22nd, 1888 at Dromreask, Glin. (Dromreask, Glin and Dirreen, Athea are neighbouring townlands, I dont believe Patrick was born in Dromreask, Ancestry gives Dromreask for some townlands within three or four miles radius of each other) They married in New York around 1912 and they had three sons: John Shanahan b 1915, Joseph Shanahan b 1916 and Patrick Shanahan b 1924 – all deceased now. Patrick Shanahan was the son of Gerardine Walsh Chapman’s great great uncle John Shanahan and Hanora Scanlan. (John was the brother of Paddy Shanahan in Dirreen). Patrick Shanahan b 1888 had a brother Michael Shanahan who was also born in Dromreask. Michael emigrated to New York along with Patrick in 1895.

John Shanahan’s brother James Shanahan, also married a  Scanlon of Ballyguiltenane – Johanna was her name. Think that marriage must have been in the US as Johanna was there before James. Oddly, both women’s fathers were Michael Scanlon. And I know that Johanna’s mother was Mary nee Moore. Seems that  wife Mary also left for America in 1895 (with John and Nora and the boys?) and she lived with Johanna and James Shanahan, so I’m wondering if the two Scanlon girls were sisters. Johanna had a brother James already settled in NY by 1895.

Another peculiar thing is that James Shanahan and his brother-in-law, James Scanlon came back to Ireland in August 1912. Why would they do that? James died in NY in 1917. His nephew Micheal (b. 1891 Drumreask) also died 1917 aged 28, his mother Nora Scanlon died 1918. Could it be the flu of 1917-18?(Gerardine Walsh Chapman)

Patsy and Julie’s son Patrick (Paddy) Ahern was born April 23rd, 1894, died April 3rd, 1971 known as Paddy ‘The Jobber’. I remember his death well as I drove my father back there to the removal. On Jan 16th, 1926 at Glin church, Paddy married Sarah McElligott 1894-1969, daughter of John McElligott from Glin, the witnesses being Stephen Ahern and Bridget McElligott. Patrick and Sarah had six daughters and one son as follows –

i.Julia Ahern 1926-2012 married Jack Vaughan and they emigrated to the U.S. I saw on the headstone a Sheila Teresa Aherne Vaughan 1926-2012, must be Julia.

ii.Eileen Ahern married Jimmy Danaher in Glin. Jimmy was an insurance agent.

iii.Mary Agnes Ahern emigrated and married a Wierman.

    iv.Bridie Ahern married an O’Donnell.

    v.Madge Ahern joined the nuns.

    vi.Patricia Ahern 1937-1950.

vii.Pa Ahern married a Keane from Ballygrennan, Listowel. They had one daughter Mary as referred to hereunder.

The original Ahern home was situated on the left hand side of the road as you head west, between Patjoe Liston’s and Paddy Dalton’s. Pa Ahern had one daughter Mary who married Matt Kennelly, Knockanure, a brother in law to my brother Eddie. Declan Dalton, a son of Paddy owns all the Ahern place now, he bought it from Mary. (George Langan)

    Epitaph reads as follows –

    In Loving memory of

    Patrick (The Jobber) Ahern

    Died 3 April 1971

    His wife Sarah

    Died 9 Oct 1969

    Their daughter Patricia

    Died 11 March 1950

As far as I know they had a family of three as follows – Teresa Anne Lucey born on Oct 3rd, 1933, died at Cork on Oct 12th, 1998. Female Lucey lives in Chicago and is married to Tehan.  Male Lucey lives in Ballyhahill, Co. Limerick. He lived for a time in a caravan next to Ned O’Shaughnessy, Knockdown, Athea, Co. Limerick. Nell went to live in Killeaney with her sister Catherine O’Connor Meade, hence the reason Killeaney is given on her marriage cert.

Ellen (Nell) corresponded with her 1st, cousin Catherine O’Connor, daughter of John O’Connor in New Zealand, one of those letters transcripted by Patrick N.O’Neill as follows –

    Year.

    Goodbye.

    Nell O’Connor.

And they did marry off Minnie Flavin to William McEvoy from Aughrim, Moyvane on Feb 25th, 1922. The Maggie Connolly mentioned was the girls headmistress at Ballyguiltenane National School, she taught my mother. Maggie lived in Glenagragra, next house to Paddy & Molly Flavin. The Daniel mentioned was Paddy Flavin’s father and Minnie (Mary) was Paddy’s sister as above.

    3. Kate O’Connor born c 1848 (daughter of James Connors & Margaret Flahavan) On Feb 10th, 1880 at Glin church, Kate married John Geoghegan, born Dec 1854 at Turraree, Glin and died on July 21st, 1891 at Ansonia, New Haven, Connecticut aged 36 years, the witnesses being – David Ruddle & Johanna Flahavan. Kate died on Jan 15th, 1915 at Ansonia, New Haven aged 67 years. John Geoghegan’s father was Patrick (Pat) Geoghegan.

Patrick (Pat) Geoghegan (son of John Geoghegan & Catherine Mulcaire) was born circa 1814, died June 12th 1892 at Turraree his widow Mary Mackessy present at death. Patrick was married twice, firstly to Margaret Moore on 28 August 1853. It is thought that Margaret was one of the Moore’s from the west of Glin/Ballyculhane area. Patrick Geoghegan & Margaret Moore had the following two children who are recorded in the Glin Parish Register.

1.John Geoghegan (son Patrick Geoghegan & Margaret Moore) was baptised on the 23 December 1854, the sponsors being – John Geoghegan and Alicia Shine. This is the John Geoghegan & Kate O’Connor above. The David Ruddle who witnessed their wedding lived in Knockdown in a farm that was later purchased by Tom Barrett. (Tom Barrett’s son Joe Barrett now owns the place) Not sure who Johanna Flavahan was, it is likely that she was the daughter of James Flahavan, Aughrim and would have been a 1st cousin. She was born in 1842 and died at Aughrim on December 2nd 1908. According to her death certificate she remained single in life. It is not known when John and Catherine emigrated to the US. It is known that they had four children three of whom were born in the U.S. as follows –

i.Kate Geoghegan born in Glin in 1882.

ii.Margaret Geoghegan, born in the U.S.

iii.Nellie Geoghegan, born in the U.S.

iv.Patrick Geoghegan, born in the U.S.

Margaret, Nellie & Patrick Geoghegan died when they were young as their death ages are recorded in the Hale Cemetery Records as follows with no dates recorded:

Margaret 6 years and 5 months.

Nellie 2 years and 6 months.

    Patrick 15 days.

John Geoghegan died in Ansonia, New Haven, Connecticut on the 1st July 1891 at the age of 36. Catherine died on 15 January 1915 at 67 years of age also in Ansonia. Her address at the time of her death was 7 Maple Street, Ansonia. They are both buried in St.Mary’s Cemetery in Ansonia. The informant for Catherine was James O’Connell who was probably her nephew (the son of her sister Mary Connors & Patrick O’Connell). None of the children are listed on the family gravestone so there is no further information about the family available at this time. Don’t know what became of their daughter Kate Geoghegan.

    2. Bernard  Geoghegan (son of Patrick Geoghegan & Margaret Moore) was baptised on the 1 October 1859. Sponsors – John Geoghegan & Anne Enright. No other records for can be found other than this baptismal record, either in the Irish or world records.

Patrick Geoghegan’s second marriage on November 6th 1866 at Kilfergus Parish, Glin, was to his second cousin,  Mary Mackessy, b. circa 1842, Tarmons, Co. Kerry daughter of Thomas Mackessy & Catherine Kennelly of Tarmons, Tarbert, Co. Kerry. Mary had a sister Margaret Mackessy who was married to William Woods, Glenagragra. (my great-great-grandfather) The sponsors for Patrick’s second marriage being Edward Shaughnessy & Margaret Mackessy. Edward Shaughnessy being the grandfather of Ned Shaughnessy, Knockdown who died March 27th 2011. The marriage record indicates that Patrick was widowed and his father was also Patrick. There’s a major discrepancy  with the age on Mary’s death cert  to that on the census return.

    4. John O’Connor. (son of James O’Connor & Margaret Flahavan) See Catherine O’Connell.

    5. Michael ‘Mick’ O’Connor. (son of James O’Connor & Margaret Flahavan) born Aug 1856, emigrated to New Zealand Aug 25th, 1876. Michael married his 1st cousin Catherine ‘Kate’ Lynch as in Catherine3 Lynch & Michael Connell, Glenagragra.

Jim Barrett: An Iconic Figure in Athea GAA Circles

When reflecting on the iconic figures in Athea GAA circles, several names stand out, such as Mick and Sean Dalton and Johnny Mullane from Knocknagorna, Dan Liston and Jimmy Hayes from Dirreen, Tom Barrett, Fairystreet, Timmy Woulfe, Cratloe and Eoin Liston, Sonny Murphy from the village. Among these esteemed individuals, Jim Barrett from Fairystreet, brother of Tom, is a name that deserves special recognition.

    Early Life and Education

Jim Barrett’s journey into the world of Gaelic football began with his education at St. Michael’s College in Listowel. Known for employing top-class coaches from Kerry, the college played a significant role in nurturing Jim’s talents. The training he received there helped him develop into a formidable player, catching the attention of Listowel Emmets football club. Despite being offered a trial with the Kerry Minor footballers, Jim chose to remain loyal to his roots in Athea, where he ultimately achieved notable success. He continued his education at University College Dublin (UCD), earning a degree in Landscape & Horticulture.

    Rise in Gaelic Football

Jim Barrett’s football prowess first emerged in 1955/’56 when he made a name for himself as an above-average juvenile player. Athea had a brilliant Juvenile team in 1956 and were narrowly beaten a point in the west final against Askeaton.

It is worthy to name those gallant Juvenile fifteen as follows –

    Henry Reidy, Upper Athea (Goalkeeper)

Paddy McCoy (Templeathea) Michael Shine (Village) Ted Ahearn (Parkanna)

Denis McGrath (Gortnagross) Frank Cotter (Cratloe) Tony Barrett (Fairystreet)

Johnny Mullane (Knocknagorna) Joe O’Keeffe (Coole West)

Jim Barrett (Fairystreet) Patrick Mullane (Knockknagorna) Neily Woulfe (Village, Bridge Hse)

John Sonny Wrenn (Gortnagross) Jerry Roche (Benmore) Tom Fitzgerald (Park)

By the following year, Jim had progressed to the minor ranks, showcasing his skills in various competitions.

    Playing Career and Achievements

On Dec 2nd, 1962 at Newcastle West, Jim was a member of the Athea Junior football team beaten by Abbeyfeale in the final of the west on a scoreline of Abbeyfeale 1-3 to Athea 0-4. The game was played in a fine sporting spirit and the standard of football was high. The outstanding player on the Athea team was Timmy Woulfe at full back but Tom Barrett (brother of Jim), Jim Leahy, Johnny Mullane and Richie O’Connor had their moments. Jim Barrett gave a good account of himself at corner forward. Dick Fitzgerald from Abbeyfeale (Railway Bar) was a very capable referee.

The Athea team that day lined out as follows –

    Denis Moore (Goalkeeoer)

Paddy Dalton. Timmy Woulfe. Phil Woulfe.

Timmy Hanrahan. Jim Leahy. Johnny Mullane.

    Tom Barrett. Paddy Dwane.

Ned Enright. Richie O’Connor. Joe O’Keeffe.

Seamus Dillane. Mikie O’Connor. Jim Barrett.

A significant milestone in Jim Barrett’s early career came on December 8, 1963, when Athea triumphed over St Senan’s in the Junior semi-final of the west at Newcastle West on a scoreline of 0-10 to 0-2., with Jim opening the scoring for his team. That same year, he secured his first piece of silverware when Athea Junior’s won the West, defeating Castlemahon in the final in a scoreline of 1-4 to 0-4. Jim also won a county Junior championship medal in 1964 when Athea beat Pallasgreen 2-11 to 0-2 in the county final. In fact, it was the 1963 championship final that had been postponed, as it was too close to Christmas that year to be concluded. The final was played in Bruree before a large crowd on Sunday March 1st, 1964.

During his academic years, Jim played for UCD and later joined Glasnevin Shamrocks following his graduation. In 1967, he won a medal in the Frank Sheehy Tournament, which honoured a former Kerry County Board chairman and included clubs from North Kerry, with Athea as an invited participant. Athea beat Ballydonoghue in the final, a Ballydonoghue team that included the legendary Jer D. O’Connor. O’Connor captained Kerry in 1965, losing to Galway in the All-Ireland Senior Final, having reached two previous finals as a Kerry player, 1960 & 1964, winning neither.

Frank Sheehy was a schoolteacher who in 1961 went to Nigeria, Africa, to take up a position of Professor of Educational Science at a training college in Asaba. He died there in 1962.

The pinnacle of Jim Barrett’s playing career occurred on September 15, 1968, at the Limerick Gaelic Grounds. He played a starring role as Athea claimed their first-ever county senior football championship by defeating Treaty Sarsfield from Limerick city in the final, a distressfully bruising encounter. Four players sent off, three from Sarsfield’s  and Kevin Dillon from Athea. The referee, Frank Halbert from Cork in his report stated that Athea came to play football and Treaty came to win at all costs. He had no doubt that only for the behaviour of the Athea players for not retaliating, the match would have never finished.

Moreover, Jim had the honour of being the first Athea man to captain a Limerick senior football team, leading them against Tipperary in a National Football League game at Templemore on Nov 10th, 1968. Unfortunately it wasn’t Limerick’s day as they were well beaten 3-7 to 0-7.

Neilius Neily Hunt, son of Thady Hunt, Coole East, Athea had the honour of being the second Athea man to captain a Limerick senior football team.

    The Limerick team that day v Tipperary  lined out as follows;

                                                 Bobby Walsh (Askeaton)

Morgan Moran (Athea)    Brendan Crosse (St. Patrick’s).  Tom Fitzgibbons (Oola)

Pat O’Brien (St. Patrick’s)        Jim Barrett (c)  (Athea)                   Con Shanahan (Croom)

Bernie Hartigan (Old Christian’s)   P. Murphy (Oola).

Eamon Cregan (Claughan)   John Ahearne (Clan-na-Gael, Dublin)          J. Cawley

    T. Nash.           Mick Tynan (Claughan)          P. Murphy (Old Christians)

Re- the Limerick team – Bobby Walsh was from Foynes but played in goal for Askeaton.

Pat O’Brien was a clerical student in Kiltegan, Co. Wicklow along with the late Gerry Roche R.I.P. from Benmore, Athea.

John Ahearne was a schoolteacher and played with Clan na Gael in Dublin. Jim & John would travel together to play the matches.

    Jim’s Versatility and Athea’s Success.

Despite being known for his skills in other positions, Jim’s adaptability and talent came to the forefront when he was selected to guard the goalposts. This decision was made after Athea experienced a series of narrow defeats, largely due to conceding too many late goals. Jim’s versatility not only showcased his personal talent but also demonstrated the importance of adaptability and teamwork.

The team’s fortunes began to change when Jim stepped into the goalkeeper role. His excellent hand-eye coordination and quick reflexes made him a formidable presence in the goal. Over the course of three consecutive games, Jim’s goalkeeping skills played a crucial role in Athea’s victories. His key attributes as goalkeeper were,

    1. Strong Hands. : Jim’s ability to catch and control the ball under pressure prevented numerous scoring opportunities for the opposing teams.

    2. His agility and rapid response time allowed him to make crucial saves, especially during critical moments of the matches

Jim Barrett’s legacy in Athea GAA circles remains a testament to his dedication and passion for the sport, standing shoulder to shoulder with the best of his time.

    Jim Barrett

1 comment on FAMILY OF PATRICK O’SULLIVAN & MARY MULLANE By George Langan.
  • O’CONNELL FAMILY, GLENAGRAGRA, GLIN, CO. LIMERICK, By George Langan.

    The 1852 Griffiths valuation show that a Michael & John O’Connell are living in Glenagragra, Parents – Unknown1 Connell. They both have a number of plots of land, some of which are occupied jointly and others which they share with other families. Mike Connolly established that Michael & John O’Connell were brothers and has researched the O’Connell family much of which I have included  here -;

    Michael 2 O’Connell.

    John2 O’Connell.

Michael2 O’Connell. The earliest Parish record that can be located is for the marriage of Michael2 O’Connell. The Athea Parish Register has the following entry for the 18th February 1846:

‘Michael Connell of Glin and Catherine Lynch of Athea Parishes having obtained a dispensation of 4° & 4° degrees of cousin unity – present as witnesses John Lynch, George Lynch, John Higgins and many others. Catherine was the sister of John and George Lynch of Glashapullagh.

Medieval canon law The first prohibited degree of consanguinity was a parent-child relationship while a second degree would be a sibling relationship. A third degree would be an uncle/aunt with a niece/nephew while fourth degree was between first cousins.

The dispensation of 4 x 4 degrees means that Michael and Catherine were first cousins which means that they had common parents.  Which means Catherine’s mother was an O’Connell or Michael’s mother was a Lynch. From the various records it is known that Michael and Catherine had at least five children who were  as follows…….

    John3 O’Connell born circa 1846.2

    Mary3 O’Connell born 1850.

    Catherine3 O’Connell born 1857.

    Johanna3 O’Connell born 1859.

    John3 O’Connell b1846.

John3 O’Connell born 1846, died Sept 20th, 1923 aged 77 years at Glenagragra, Mary (Mollie) Flavin present at his death. John being the eldest son took over the family farm. On Feb 17th, 1885 John married Mary Fennel from Glennalappa, Newtownsandes.  They were married at the Annunciation RC Church Newtownsandes on February 17th 1885 and the witnesses were James and Johanna Fennell. John’s father Michael Connell listed as deceased and Mary Fennell’s father William Fennell was living. Mary’s parents were William Fennell 1841-1885 and Ellen Connell 1831-1906. William and Ellen were married at St.Bartholomew’s RC Church, Athea in 1861.  The 1901 Glenagragra census records John O’ Connell as 52 and Mary Fennell as 34 years old which means she was born around 1867. The Murher Parish record shows that Mary was baptized on 30 March 1862 which means she was actually 39 years old. Mary died from cancer on Aug 15th, 1939, aged 75 years, Paddy Flavin present at her death in Glenagragra. John and Mary did not have any children. Mary’s niece Mollie McInerny aged 6 is living with them on the 1911 census John is 66 and Mary is given as 29 years old – this should probably be 49 as they have been married 26 years. It is unlikely that these ages are accurate as Michael and Catherine did not marry until 1846. John and Mary did not have any children. The farm was inherited by Patrick Flavin, the eldest son of Daniel Flahavan and Joanna O’Connell. It was arranged that Patrick would marry Mollie McInerny the niece of Mary Fennell, Patrick being the nephew of John Connell. William Fennell and Ellen Connell had a daughter Johanna Fennell born on June 18th, 1866. William Fennell died on circa 1885, cant find a death cert for him, his wife Ellen Connell Fennell died on June 27th, 1906 at Glenalappa, aged 75 years.

    Mary3 O’Connell 1849-1917

Going by the 1901 Census, Mary3 O’ Connell was born circa 1849 and died Jan 16th, 1917 aged 68 years. She married Jeremiah Connolly born circa 1836 and died at Glenagragra on May 1st, 1934 aged 98 years, son of John Connolly from Glensharrold, Carrickerry, marriage date, Feb 13th 1872, the witnesses were Thomas O’Shaughnessy & Mary Connolly. Both parents were alive. The 1911 census records that they had 8 children only two of which were still living. Paddy Faley informed me that Mary met her death in rare circumstances. Say’s Paddy,‘’back in those days, the threshing of oats was carried out in the kitchen with flails. Most of the houses back then had very large kitchens, which proved ideal for the task on hand, and Connolly’s was no exception. It was around the Christmas time of the year and Jer agreed to allow his house to be used by the local wrenboys for their wren dance. This meant that the threshing had to be postponed for a few days in order to have the kitchen ready for the dance. The threshed oats was piled up at the lower end of the kitchen with the un-treshed sheaves piled against it. Jer and his family had the occasion to be away from home on a particular day and on returning, he found his wife Mary to be missing. Several hours had elapsed and with still no sign of his wife, Jer decided to set up a search party to try to locate her whereabouts. They searched the entire farm and enquired locally but still no trace of Mary. Tom Lynch, a neighbour of the Connolly’s (Tom later lived in a cottage at Blaine Bridge) came up with the brainy idea that she may have fallen down between the sheaves and corn in the kitchen. They removed the sheaves and to their utmost dismay, there they found her lying dead on the floor. It would appear that she had climbed to the top of the sheaves hoping to find some eggs that the hens may have laid up there and in doing so fell head first down between the corn and the sheaves. As she was unable to set herself free, she ultimately smothered and died’’. (George Langan/Mike Connolly)

As stated, Jeremiah Connolly and Mary3 O’Connell had eight children. The eight children were:

NB. Ballyguiltenane given as the birth place for the family, Glenagragra was often referred to as Ballyguiltenane in those days.

    (1) Mary4 Connolly born ? cant find birth cert. No information on Mary.

(2)Michael Connolly, born March 4th  1875 at Ballyguiltenane. His father Jeremiah’s occupation given as a labourer. No information on Michael.

    (3) James Connolly born April 1st, 1877 at Ballyguiltenane. No information on James.

    (4) Kate Connolly born Aug 12th, 1879 at Ballyguiltenane, died Dec 13th, 1880, her father Jeremiah Connolly present at her death. Her father’s occupation now given as a small farmer.

    (5) Jeremiah Connolly born circa 1882, emigrated to the U.S.A.

    (6) Patrick (Paddy Jer) Connolly born May 15th,1884, married twice, firstly to Ellen Windle from Barniegue, Carrickerry, a sister to Johnny Windle. Ellen Windle born circa 1891, died on June 17th 1923, her brother John Windle present at her death in Knockfinisk. (An O’Donnell family now live in a new dwelling next door to Johnny Windle’s old homestead.) Paddy Jer Connolly & Ellen Windle had two daughters and one son namely –

i.Jeremiah Connolly. Jeremiah died over at Windle’s, his mothers people in Barneigue when he was 1 year old, he never saw Glenagragra.

ii.Catherine Connolly. Catherine married Jeremiah ‘Jer’ Mulvihill from Glenalappa. (Jeremiah Mulvihill had a sister Kathy Mulvihill who was married to Tom Scanlon, Glasha, Athea, Co. Limerick)

Paddy Jer Connolly’s second marriage was on Feb 13th, 1934 at Glin to Bridie Shanahan, daughter of John Shanahan,  Scort and  Ellen Faley, Glasha, Paddy’s age given as 50 years and Bridie’s age given as 33 years. The witnesses were William McInerney and Bridget Quinlivan. Ellen Faley was the aunt of renowned poet Paddy Faley. John Shanahan’s father was Thomas Shanahan.  John Shanahan aged 35 years and Ellen Faley aged 35 years when they were married on Jan 29th1898 at Glin church, the witnesses being Daniel Faley, Turraree and Bridget Shanahan.

Jack Connolly, Ballinamadough also informed me that his father the previously mentioned Patsy Connolly and Paddy Jer Connolly,  were 2nd cousins. Family from Paddy Jer Connolly and Bridie Shanahan as follows –

    (i) Paddy Connolly the present occupant who married Gretta Greaney, daughter of the legendary sean nos singer Con Greaney, Rooskagh. Paddy went to his eternal reward on Sat June 13th 2020 aged 80 years..

(ii) Eileen Connolly who married her neighbour Paddy Dalton, Scort.

(iii) Bridie Connolly who married Jer Mulvihill from Glenalappa, Moyvane, 1st cousin to the Jer Mulvihill who married her half sister Catherine Connolly. The two Mulvihill families lived in the one farmyard.

    (7) Daniel Connolly born May 2nd, 1889, emigrated to the U.S.A. and joined the police there. He was shot in the course of his duty and died some years afterwards as a result of the said gunshot wound. He came home on a visit to Glenagragra before his death.

    (8) George Connolly born Nov 17th, 1892, went to work at his cousins the Dalton’s of Park, Kilcoleman and remained there ‘till his death. Can’t find a death cert for George.

It was the late  Paddy Connolly (above) that gave me the information on his family.

It would appear that John O’Connell, (brother of Michael O’Connell who was married to Catherine2 Lynch) had a son Patrick Connell, Glenagragra Upper (Scort) born circa 1845 who died July 14th, 1931, aged 85 years, known to all and sundry as Pats Connell.  On February 11th 1868, Pats Connell married John O’Connor’s sister Mary Connors 1843-1925. Mary’s age given as 24 and Pats as 22. The witnesses were Thomas Sheahan (brother to Mary Sheahan who married Thomas Connors) and Bridget Cregan. Mary Connors Connell died on Jan 1st, 1925 at Glenagragra aged 82 years as hereunder.

Sources: Elizabeth O’Neill granddaughter and Peter O’Connor great grandson of John O’ Connor and Catherine O’Connell, also Patrick N.O’Neill son of Elizabeth O’Neill at – Patrick N.O’Neill

John O’Connor was born circa 1850 at Ballyguiltenane, Glin, son of James O’Connor & Margaret Flahavan. The exact date is not known as his baptism is not recorded in the Parish Register as it does not start until December 1850.  What is known is that John emigrated to New Zealand in 1877. He sailed on the James N. Fleming in July 1877 from Greenock in Scotland arriving in November 1877 in Otago, New Zealand. He traveled out with John O’Shea, Maurice Culhane and Patrick Sheahan. It is believed that John O’Shea was the brother of  Ellen O’Shea who married William Lynch the son of John Lynch and Mary Walsh of Glasha. (see Lynch William further on) Maurice Culhane was the son of Thomas Culhane & Mary Nolan from Ballyguiltenane, Glin and Patrick Sheahan was the son of Patrick Sheahan & Ellen Hanrahan from Tullyleague, Glin.

From Otago, John moved to Canterbury and took up work in the area. On December 31st 1878 at Shands Track Catholic Church John married Catherine3 O’Connell the daughter of Michael O’Connell and Catherine2 Lynch of Glenagragra, Glin. Catherine3 O’Connell was born at Leitrim Middle, Moyvane, Co. Kerry 1857/58 and died at Kingston Crossing, New Zealand Aug 14th 1938. The connection with Leitrim Middle was through  Daniel Flahavan and Johanna O’Connell.    Catherine traveled out to New Zealand on the ‘Marlborough’ from Glasgow to Bluff in August 1877. She emigrated with her cousin also called Catherine (Kate) O’Connell. The Passenger list records that both Catherine’s came from Co. Limerick.   Catherine3Connell was baptised at the Immaculate Conception Church in Glin on January 17th 1857. Only one godparent is listed and she is Mary Coonery.  John & Catherine, therefore would have known each other before emigrating since Catherine’s mother Catherine2 Lynch was the sister of George2 and John2 Lynchof Glasha  and George2 Lynch’s wife Mary Flahavan  was the aunt of John O’Connor. Catherine (Kate) Connell, who was born about 1856 and died in 1924 in New Zealand at the age of 68 years, was the daughter of Dennis Connell & Mary Beahan from around Ardagh. Catherine (Kate) Connell married Henry Windle, who was born on 11 February 1852, the son of John Nicholas Windle and Ellen Connell of Knockfinnisk, Athea, Co. Limerick. This Ellen Connell was a relative, if not a sister to Michael & John O’Connell, Glenagragra. Two  of Henry Windle’s  sisters Johanna Windle b1858 and Mary Windle b 1860 also went New Zealand  sailing on the Victory arriving in Otago on 23 December 1883.  (George Langan/Patrick N.O’Neill/Mike Connolly)

In 1882 John and Catherine moved to Longridge Village, Kingston Crossing to join John’s brother, Michael O’Connor who had emigrated to New Zealand the year before John in 1876. Michael had drawn a ballot lot of 200 acres. The brothers went into partnership on the farm and both families settled there, along with other families who had emigrated from Glin and Athea. The other families included two of George2 Lynch and Mary Flahavan’s children Catherine3 Lynch (who married her first cousin Michael O’Connor in 1878) and George3 Lynch who married Johanna McCarthy. John O’Connor and Catherine2 O’Connell had eight children of whom five survived. See hereunder –

John O’Connor died March 21st 1896 at Kingston Crossing, Southland, New Zealand at the age of 46 years as a result of falling from his horse while traveling from Kingston Crossing to Balfour (Henry Windle gave evidence at the inquest of the death of John). His death record indicates that he had been in New Zealand 17 years and had married Catherine3 O’Connell in  Lincoln, Canterbury at the age of 30 and had three sons and two daughters. Catherine continued to manage the farm bringing up her five children in difficult circumstances. She expanded the farm purchasing more land in the area and eventually bought her brother-in- law Michael’s share of the original block. Johanna3 O’Connell 1853-1937

Johanna3 O’Connell born 1853, baptised April 12th, 1853, died from heart disease on March 12th, 1921 at Turraree, Glin, aged 67 years, her daughter Katie Flavin present at her death. Johanna married Daniel Flahavan on Jan 12th, 1889, the eldest son of Patrick Flahavan, Turraree Upper and Elizabeth Mulvihill from Leitrim Middle, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. The witnesses for the marriage were, Path Connell & Mary Connolly. Whilst they were not directly related Joanna’s uncle George2 Lynch was married to Mary Flahavan, Daniels aunt. Daniel Flavin was born circa 1854 and died at Glenagragra on April 19th, 1942, aged 88 years, his daughter Katie Flavin present at his death. (See Dan Flavin b1855 further on in blog)

    John2 O’Connell.

It would appear that John2 O’Connell, (brother of Michael2 O’Connell who was married to Catherine2 Lynch) had a son Patrick3 Connell, Glenagragra Upper (Scort) born circa 1846 who died July 14th, 1931, at Glenagragra, aged 85 years, known to all and sundry as Pats Connell.  On February 11th 1868, Patrick Pats Connell married John O’Connor’s sister Mary Connors 1843-1925.

Mary Connors was born circa 1843 and died on Jan 1st, 1925 at Glenagragra aged 82 years. Mary was the daughter of James O’Connor c1810-1890 and Margaret Flahavan c1815-1885. As already stated Patrick (Pat’s) father was John O’Connell, he lived in Glenagragra and shared three plots of land, two with his brother Michael2 Connell (Michael who married Catherine2 Lynch, Glasha) and one with Henry Wingle (Windle). Eventually John’s plot was taken over by his son Pat’s and then by Pat’s son Michael.

The 1901 and 1911 census shows that Patrick3 O’Connell & Mary Connors are living in Glenagragra and that he was born in Co. Kerry. This does not necessarily mean his family was from Kerry. He may have been born in Kerry because his mother may have returned home for the birth. However there is no baptismal record  for any parish in the Diocese of Kerry for the period 1840 – 1850. The Griffith’s Valuation and canceled Land Books records indicate that John2 Connell his father lived in Glenagragra. Whether the family originally came from Kerry is not known. The canceled land books first records Patrick Connell as occupying plot 10b of 16 acres in Glenagragra in 1891 with a house valued at 5 shillings.  Honora Connell occupies plot 10a, Daniel Nolan plot 10c and Patrick Mulvihill plot 10d. Whether Honora is related to Patrick is not known.

The 1901 census records Patrick using the family name O’Connell rather than Connell. Patrick is recorded as being 58 years and Mary as 60 years (giving birth years as 1843 and 1841 respectively). There are two children recorded as being at home at the time of the census – Catherine4 Connell aged 18 years (born 1883) and Jeremiah4 Connell aged 15 years (born 1886).  On the 1911 census Patrick is given as 72 years and Mary as 69 years (now 3 years younger than Patrick). This would make their birth years 1839 and 1841. This is unlikely as Patrick difference is 14 years between the two census returns but Mary’s is only nine years. The only child recorded on the 1911 census is Michael4 (Mehal) Connell who is aged 34  (born 1877). Mary Ahern is recorded on the census as being a boarder age 9 years old but she is in fact their grand-daughter. Patrick and Mary are recorded as being married for 44 years) and have had a total of 9 children born alive but only indicate that one child is living. It is now known that this is not correct and that in fact  there were eight children alive in 1911 and one child Mary who had died  and so the record should have read 9 children born alive and 8 children surviving.  What is known is that Michael4 (Mehal) Connell born on June 12th, 1873 inherited the farm and lived there until a few months before his death in 1964 at the age 90.  The old house he lived in was falling down and he was living in very poor conditions. He lived his final months in the old O’Connor house in Ballyguiltenane and was cared for until his death by his cousin Ita O’Connor and her husband Johnny Kelly.

On their son Jeremiah’s passport application in 1922 states that he is returning home to visit his mother and father. There are no marked graves for either Patrick or Mary in any of the 11 graveyards in and around Glin, Athea, Moyvane, Ballyhahill or Tarbert.  It is assumed that like Thomas & Mary O’Connor are buried in Kilfergus graveyard. What is known is that Michael, their son is buried in an unmarked grave behind the headstone of James & Margaret O’Connor in Kilfergus Graveyard in Glin. (Mike Connolly)  The known family of Patrick3 O’Connell & Mary Connors (9) as follows:

    (i)James4 O’Connell b1869.

James was born on Jan 10th, 1869 at  Ballyguiltenane. James emigrated to the US in 1896 and went to live in Ansonia, New haven, Connecticut.  James married Mary Lynch in Ansonia in 1899. Mary was born on June 14th, 1876 and was the eldest daughter of Matthew Lynch and Bridget Culhane from Ballynagoul, Glin, Co. Limerick. Matthew and Bridget were married on Feb 9th, 1875 at Newtownsandes Church, Co. Kerry, the witnesses being Maurice Walsh and Edmond McMahon. Matthew’s father was John Lynch, a farmer and Bridget’s father was Pat Culhane from Leitrim Middle, who was also a farmer. Bridget Culhane was the daughter of Patrick Culhane and Honora Enright of Leitrim Middle, Newtownsandes.  Bridget’s brother Thomas Culhane was married to Margaret Hegarty and their eldest daughter Bridget Culhane married James Lynch of Glahapullagh, Athea, my great grandfather.  Mary Lynch was therefore a 1st cousin to Bridget Culhane.

James and Mary are recorded on the 1900 US Census  living at 42 High Street, Ansonia, New haven, Connecticut. James and Mary were still living at the same address in 1910 as James petition for naturalisation is recorded  as 7 October 1910 with this address.  However there is no 1910 census record available. On the 1920 Census, James and Mary are living at 9 Rigg Street, Ansonia.  There are seven children listed on the census as follows -.

    Mary Agnes4 Connell b. 1900

    John4Connell  b. 1902

    Catherine4 Connell b.1903

    James4 Connell b. 1904

    Bridget4 Connell b.1908

    Anna4 Connell b. 1914

    Margaret4 Connell b.1918

In the 1930 Census they are recorded as living at 14, Rigg Street, Ansonia.  James3 Connell died  on 31 August 1956 in Hewitt Memorial Home, Shelton, Fairfield County, Connecticut at the age of 87. His wife Mary Lynch died on 26 May 1949 at 14 Rigg Street Ansonia, New Haven County, Connecticut at the age of 73. (Mike Connolly/George Langan)

Just a line hoping it will find you in good health, as you are the only Aunt I now have from mother’s side R.I.P. I’d like to hear that you would be getting on well. I have 3 aunts at father’s side Aunt Mary is about 80 years it is a big age, & she is in fair good health. Old Mike Windle of Glenagragra was buried a short time ago he was 90 years of age his wife is still living. Patrick Lynch of Glosha was buried also, he would be a first cousin of yours his brother Jim who lives in the shop is still living & he is over 80 years. Jer Connolly that is your sister Mary’s R.I.P. husband is still alive he is about 92 years of age. You feel lonely now Aunt Kate without your dear friend Mary R.I.P. Windle. I had a letter from Mrs Nicholl & she gave all news, John Windle is alive, we gave him the news & he felt lonely he has nobody but himself left now. I answered Mrs Nicholls letter, this old man of the Windles is as deaf as his dear sister, so you could get nothing out of him so he asked me to write to ye & do the best I could. I have no more to say at present, but hoping to hear from you soon again.
Wishing you & yours every day’s happiness,

1.Patrick1 McInerney corn circa 1750 in Co. Clare who, to the best of our knowledge, married my ancestor Katherine Kate Langan. Kate was born circa 1760 and died circa 1840 at Tullyglass, Glin. Thomas F. Culhane (Lawney) has made reference to this in the book, Home Thoughts from Abroad page 95. The McInerney’s got the nickname of the ‘Brandy’ McInerney’s because of winning a prize of 5 pounds and a bottle of brandy put up by the Knight of Glin for swimming across the River Shannon from Clare to Glin. Patrick McInerney & Kate Langan had the following family –

2.Patrick2 McInerney (Patrick1) born circa 1789, Tullyglasss, Glin. Patrick died a widower on April 18th, 1879 at Tullyglass, Glin, aged 90 years, Kate McInerney Tullyglass present at his death. (There was another Patrick McInerney who died in Glin district in 1865 aged 70 years.) Patrick2 McInerney and Unknown wife had the following family of 2-

i.John3 McInerney, (Patrick2, Patrick1) born circa 1830 at Tullyglass, Glin and died there a widower sometime between 1901 and 1911. The husband and wife, Patrick & Bridget Scanlon were boarders there in the 1901 census and had taken over for the 1911 census with no trace of John. His sister-in-law Catherine McInerney who was a widow lived with him. Bridget Scanlan was John’s niece, daughter of Thomas McInerny & Katie Boyle.

See 1901 Census for John McInerney, spelt McEnry.

ii.Thomas3 McInerney (Patrick2,Patrick1.) born circa 1840 at Tullyglass, Glin. Thomas married Katie Boyle in 1870 at Tarbert. I can’t find any record of this marriage. They had a daughter Bridget4 McInerney born at Tullyglass on Jan 17th, 1877, her sponsors being – James & Nora Donovan.  On Feb 6th, 1900 at Glin church, Bridget4 married Patrick Scanlon, Kinard, Glin, born on Aug 24th, 1869, son of farmer, Patrick Scanlon, & Margaret Ahern, the witnesses being – Denis Scanlon & Mary Boyle. The Barry’s farmed in Kinard, Glin. One of Sarah’s sisters married Tom Pegum who owned the fisheries and an estate in Cahara. At some stage they lost the estate to the banks. It was subsequently taken over by Jimmy Stack and lastly by Joe Hogan, son of John Hogan, Kinard & Mary Liston, Knocknagorna. Joe had a quarry in Borrigone, Askeaton. Another sister of Sarah’s was married to Paddy Stackpoole at Wallace’s cross, Tullyleague whose daughter was married to Michael Meade, Chapel Rd, Glin.
