The Life and Legacy of George Lynch

    Early Life and Family Background

George Lynch, my grandfather, was born into a close-knit family in Glasha, Athea, Co. Limerick. His father was James Lynch and his mother was Bridget Culhane. James Lynch was baptised in Athea RC Church, November 4th 1846 his sponsors being John Flavin and Maria Lyons. The baptismal record shows that his parents George and Mary Lynch were living in Clounleharde. James died of a back ailment, August 4th 1893 and is buried in Templeathea Cemetery with his mother Mary Flahavan who died on January 24th 1908 at the age of 90yrs. He got married on February 23rd 1878 at Moyvane Church to Bridget Culhane 1858-1930, Leitrim Middle, Moyvane, Co Kerry. Bridget’s father was Thomas Culhane and her mother was Margaret (Peg) Hegarty. The witnesses were John Lynch who was either his uncle or his younger brother who later emigrated to New Zealand and Patrick Culhane, Bridget’s brother.

George Lynch was baptized in Athea Church on June 9, 1883, his baptism was witnessed by his paternal granduncle, John Lynch, and his maternal grandmother, Margaret (Peg) Hegarty. George inherited the family farm from his mother, Bridget Lynch nee Culhane. Known for his keen intellect, George was a learned man, particularly gifted in arithmetic, often helping us with our schoolwork. Although he was offered a teaching position in his youth, he chose not to pursue it.

    Journey to America

On July 27, 1911, at the age of 28, George embarked on a journey to the United States, sailing from Queenstown aboard the SS Adriatic. His destination was Kansas City, where he intended to stay with his aunt Mrs. Hannah Kinsella at 807 West 13th St, Kansas City. It is likely that Hannah was his mother’s sister, the daughter of Thomas Culhane and Margaret Hegarty of Leitrim Middle, Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry. After initially staying in St. Louis with his sister Ellen (Sr. Dominic), George moved to Kansas City, where he worked for the railway company. Despite being highly regarded and offered a promotion, he returned to Ireland after a year or so.

    Marriage and Family Life

George married Nora Barrett on February 14, 1914, at Athea Church. Nora, born on April 15, 1883, the daughter of John Barrett from Lr. Dirreen and Johanna Thornton from Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. George and Nora built a life together in Glasha where they raised a family of 8, six sons and two daughters.

    The Meadow in the Mountains

George Lynch had a charming meadow of hay nestled in a 3-acre field over in the mountain. This picturesque field had a section that was fenced in, fondly referred to as ‘the half acre’. In a bygone era, either the Government or the Land Commission had enacted a law requiring all landowners to lease a half-acre of their farm to any family who had built a house on their property. In the year 1868, George Lynch’s grandfather who was also called George invited Mick Faley and his wife Ellen Sheahan from Templeathea to a corner of this meadow in Glasha. Mick was born circa 1834. George was a road contractor and by having Mick Faley nearby, he knew he could expect the new labourer to work in his employment, which he did as did his sons, Denis Faley and Dan thereafter.

The rent for this half acre was set at no more than one pound per year, making this a thoughtful provision for families like the Faley’s. George Lynch’s meadow in the mountain was a testament to nature’s beauty and the camaraderie of community. The half-acre, a remnant of a time when the government sought to support families, had become a cherished part of the landscape for the Faley family. It was more than just a piece of land; it was a gathering place, a backdrop for laughter, and a canvas for the memories of summer.

Paddy Faley, grandson of Mick Faley, informed me that James Lynch was an educated intelligent man. Says Paddy – ‘one day he called to the meadow where he had Jack Aherne, my father Denis and my uncle Dan mowing hay with scythes. He said to them, ‘tis the last time you’ll be mowing it boys the horses will be cutting it next year. There was no appearance of mowing machines then and he left the three men very puzzled.’

Following James’ death, his wife Bridget took up the mantle so to speak and took on the responsibility of ensuring that the task was completed, which it was.  In the words of, Paddy Faley – ‘His widow Bridget Culhane of Leitrim, Moyvane did not despair. Being the determined woman that she was, possessing an indomitable spirit, she carried on the business as efficiently and successfully as her husband and reared and cared for her family single-handed’.

A Tale of Loyalty: Flora the Collie

The Bond Between Denis and Flora

Paddy Faley often heard enchanting stories from his father Denis, about a remarkable collie dog named Flora. This dog resided at Lynch’s, where Denis worked. Over time, Denis and Flora developed a profound attachment to each other, a bond that transcended the usual relationship between man and animal. Denis’s daily routine involved a walk of approximately one mile from his home to Lynch’s. This journey, taken each morning and evening, became a familiar ritual not only for Denis but also for Flora, who eagerly awaited his arrival each day.

    Denis’s Illness and Flora’s Devotion

Life, however, has its unexpected turns. Denis fell victim to an influenza outbreak, confining him to his bed and making it impossible for him to attend work. During this period of illness, Flora’s loyalty and affection for Denis shone through in an extraordinary manner.

Every morning, without fail, Flora would make the journey from Lynch’s to Denis’s home. The door, always left ajar, allowed her to enter and make her way to Denis’s bedside. There, she would gently lick his outstretched hand, offering comfort and companionship in his time of need. After a short visit, she would depart, only to return the following morning to repeat her comforting ritual.

    A Remarkable Connection

The connection between Denis and Flora was a testament to the astonishing affection that can exist between man and beast. It was a bond that left a lasting impression on all who witnessed it, including my mother, who remembered Flora fondly. Flora’s daily visits provided not just physical comfort to Denis but also a reminder of the enduring power of loyalty and love. This story remains a cherished memory within the Faley family, highlighting the remarkable and sometimes surprising ways that animals touch our lives.

    The Jovial Neighbour: George’s Adventures

George was well-loved in the neighbourhood, known for his warmth and companionship with both his family and neighbour’s. His affinity for creating joyous moments was evident in the way he engaged with everyone around him.

One of the most cherished spots in George’s home was his spacious kitchen. This was not just a place for cooking, but a hub for laughter and playful antics. Paddy Faley recounted how George would dive headfirst into every frolic and caper that the youngsters devised. These lively gatherings took place especially when his wife, Nora, ventured next door to chat with Bridget Dalton.

Nora, albeit loving and supportive, had her hands full with George’s antics. She was often found darning the heels of George’s socks, worn thin from his energetic hopping around the kitchen with the lads. These tales of sock-mending became almost legendary, each stitch a testament to George’s spirited personality.

    An Unexpected Black Eye

One particularly memorable incident involved a game of balloons, which took an unexpected turn. George, ever the enthusiastic participant, ended up with a black eye, courtesy of a well-aimed right hook from Sonny Reidy. Of course, Sonny insisted it was an accident, adding a humorous twist to the evening. The Reidy family lived on the mountainside, nestled between the Lynch and Faley homes, and their presence added to the vibrant community spirit.

In essence, George was a beacon of joy and lightheartedness in his neighbourhood, creating lasting memories with his family and friends through his playful nature and boundless energy.

The Adventures of Nora and Bridget

In the lively tales of yesteryear, George Lynch was not the only one known for antics and frolics. His wife, Nora Barrett, and her friend Bridget White Faley, affectionately known as Noan and Bridge, added their own spirited adventures to the mix. Their playful competitions and closeness brought joy and laughter to those around them.

Nora and Bridget shared a unique bond, often racing each other across the open fields that stretched beyond their homes. These races were not just about speed but were a testament to their enduring friendship and competitive spirits. It was widely known that Nora had a knack for winning these races. Her swift strides and unyielding determination often left Bridget trailing behind. Yet, it was all in good fun, and the races were more about the joy of the challenge than the outcome.

    Bridget’s Playful Strategy

Bridget was not one to easily concede defeat. Known for her clever tactics, she had a playful strategy to keep the competition lively. Whenever she felt fatigue creeping in and knew victory was slipping away, Bridge would dramatically fall to the ground, declaring the race null and void. This playful act ensured that the outcome was always up for debate, and the races could continue without one side dominating the fun.

    A Nod to Tradition

In those days, it was common for women to be addressed by their maiden names, a tradition that added a personal touch to their identities. Thus, Nora was known as Noan Barrett, Bridget as Bridge White and Bridget Dalton as Bridge ‘Martin’ (Liston). This practice not only honoured their heritage but also highlighted the close-knit nature of their communities.

The tales of Nora and Bridget’s races serve as a charming reminder of the joys of friendship and the simple pleasures found in life’s playful moments. Their spirited escapades across the fields are cherished memories, capturing a time when laughter and togetherness were the true treasures of the day.

    Passion for Gaelic Football.

George had a profound passion for Gaelic football and greatly admired Co. Kerry and the legendary Mick O’Connell. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that he attended the 1953 All-Ireland football final between Kerry and Armagh. His son, Dan, was home from Chicago for a holiday, and Dan, along with his brother James, Pakie Geoghegan, and his wife May from Glin, all set off in Pakie’s car for Croke Park, Dublin.

That memorable day, Sunday, September 27th, Kerry emerged victorious with a scoreline of Kerry 0-13, Armagh 1-6, making it an unforgettable experience for the traveling party.

    The Joy of Summer

For Paddy Faley, there was no sound more delightful than that of George’s horses and the rhythmic mowing bar when he arrived each summer to cut the meadow near their house. Paddy would excitedly recount, “We hurried home from school to witness the beautiful sight of the two horses stepping out together, with the long shaft of the machine stretching between them, harnessed with traces and quins’’. Paddy’s heart swelled with joy as he watched these powerful animals work in harmony, a dance of strength and grace.

    The Art of Mowing

George, with a practiced hand, took command of the horses with ease. The long reins allowed him to communicate with them, a silent conversation that only he and the horses understood. The whip, not a tool of harshness but rather a gentle reminder, ensured that everyone was pulling their weight in the task at hand. For Paddy, the rhythmic sounds of the mowing machine were a symphony, each click and clatter igniting his imagination and filling his heart with excitement.  The melodious sound of the clicking ratchet wheel as it was turned out of gear to reverse and line up at the end of each row was music to Paddy’s ears.

    A Lesson in Sharpening

After the initial flurry of mowing, George would turn his attention to the maintenance of the machine. Paddy observed with keen interest as George carefully placed one of the long knives of the mowing machine on two boxes over a tub of water. With a scythe-stone in hand and dipping it occasionally in the water, George skillfully sharpened each V-shaped section of the blade, ensuring the machine was ready to tackle the next swath of grass. This careful attention to detail was a testament to the skill and dedication required in the art of mowing, leaving a lasting impression on young Paddy. For Paddy, these moments spent with George Lynch were not just about mowing hay; they were lessons in life, community, and the simple joys of summer in the mountain. Each summer day spent in that meadow would become a cherished memory, a part of his own story woven into the fabric of life in their small corner of the world.

    Living with Lynch.

Sadly, George’s wife Nora passed to her eternal reward on July 13th, 1955, and following her passing, George moved to the ‘Glen’ to live with us at my father’s request. This gesture reflected the open-handedness of my father, welcoming his father-in-law into our home. George frequented Athea every Friday to collect his old age pension and spent afternoons at his son Mick’s pub. Although being just a moderate drinker, George believed in supporting family businesses. One memorable incident involved George getting a lift home from the pub, only to misjudge the entrance and end up in a cluster of briars. My father had to fetch him with a flashlight, leading to a humorous and cherished family story. There was a programme on Radio Eireann at the time namely – ‘Living with Lynch’ and it was often jokingly referred to in our house, in such instances ‘that’s what you get when you’re living with Lynch.

    George’s Passion for Gardening

An accomplished gardener, George’s dedication to sowing and tilling was admirable. Rain or shine, he would work tirelessly in the garden, much to my mother’s distress as she urged him to take shelter. Her care for him was unwavering, always ensuring he was well looked after.

George Lynch passed away on April 3, 1971, at the age of 88. His life was characterised by his intellect, kindness, and dedication to family. His legacy continues through the stories and values he passed down, reminding us of his contributions to our family’s history.

Looking at the Census for 1901 & 1911 it would appear that James Jim Lynch who was born in 1859 was married twice, firstly on February 25th 1879 at the Immaculate Conception RC, Glin to a Bridget Culhane, daughter of Maurice ‘Coiner’ Culhane and Ellen Guiney, Ballyguiltenane Lr. Jim’s age given as 20 years. The witnesses were James’s brother William Lynch and Maria Sheehy. Jim Lynch’s second marriage on April 8th 1902 at Athea church was to Johanna Casey, b. 1877, R.I.P March 24th 1953, daughter of Tom Casey a bootmaker from Lr Dirreen, Athea. The witnesses for the wedding were Daniel Scanlon, Dromreask, Glin and Ellie (Nell) Casey who was married to Histon from Dirreen. There was no family from either marriage. Jim’s age given as 48 years and Hannie aged 25 years.  Looking at the 1911 census it states therein; James Lynch married to Hannie Lynch for the past 9 yrs. This Hannie was the Johanna Casey, female servant, age 23 as per the 1901 census for the same house. So it seems that Jim’s first wife wasn’t dead no more than a year when he married Hannie Casey. Also present during that 1901 census was a Margaret Costelloe, niece, aged 10yrs. Margaret was the daughter of Bridget’s sister Margaret Culhane who was married to Tom Costelloe, Clounleharde East. Jim Lynch was a cooper by trade and made ‘firkins’ for the local farmers. These ‘firkins’ were used for the storing and conveying of home made butter which the farmers made at the time. The farmers sold the butter locally and at the market towns of Listowel and Newcastlewest.

Johanna Casey was a sister to the shoemaker Paddy Casey. She was known to all and sundry as Hannie Casey. The Casey’s came from Lr. Dirreen otherwise known as ‘Scrathan’. Paddy emigrated to Australia and lived in ‘The Bush’ there for years. He eventually returned home and built for himself a little thatched house in Dromreask at the turn of the road a few hundred yards east of Lynch’s, now Dalton’s. Paddy’s house was known as ‘The Humpy’ due to its size and shape. Apparently, similar shaped houses in the ‘bush’ were referred to as ‘Humpie’s’. That turn of the road is still referred to today as ‘Paddy Casey’s turn’,

Johanna Casey, (Jim Lynch’s wife) had a sister, Mary Casey who married  Michael O’Connor R.I.P. August 26th 1950 son of Tom O’Connor. The original O’Connor home was a thatched one and was situated close by the cottage where Michael and Mary lived, the same cottage where Thady O’Sullivan now resides. They had two daughters and one son; Hannah, who married Stephen Moore, Carrickerry, (Moore’s Bar). Mary (Moll), who married Mick Dalton, son of Paddy Dalton, Carrickerry and Mary Woulfe, Glenbawn and Tom O’Connor who died of a heart complaint at the age of 6yrs.

Following the death of her parents Michael and Mary, Moll O’Connor,(pictured 1989 on left with her daughter Mary), came to live with her aunt Hannie Casey Lynch who left her the place. Mick Dalton did a ‘cliamhain isteach’, (married into).

    The Cooper’s Landmark

In a time where landmarks were more than just geographical markers, ‘The Cooper’s dwelling held a significant spot in the local community. When a stranger asked for directions, they were often told to look for ‘The Cooper’s, a key point of reference in the area. This was not just because of its distinct charm but because it was a bustling hub of activity.

    Hannie Casey’s Shop

James’ second wife, Hannie Casey, opened a shop at this iconic location. Her establishment attracted customers from nearby towns such as Glenagrahra, Dirreen, Dromreask, and even as far as Ballyguiltenane. The majority of these visitors traveled on foot, traversing shortcuts and paths etched across hills, valleys, and mountains. Hannie sold provisions of all things necessary for the everyday running of the home. Paddy Faley told me how in the evenings he would make his way down the mountain  and across the fields to the shop to purchase a half quarter of Plug or Bendigo tobacco for his father at a price of one shilling and three pence. For his mother he would purchase a half ounce of Clarke’s white cap snuff for five pence and for himself he would have the treat of a few of Geary’s toffee sweets for one penny.

    A Community Gathering Place

‘The Cooper’s was more than just a shop; it was a community gathering place. Many locals would come together here in the evenings for a chat or to play a game of cards, particularly the popular game of 41, with some of the best card gamblers in the area. It was also a social hub for young men and women, a place where everybody felt welcomed by Hannie’s warm and generous spirit.

Hannie was known not only for her hospitality but also for her matchmaking efforts. She took great joy in bringing courting couples together, and ‘The Cooper’s’ shed across the road became a well-known spot for arranging dates. This shed remains standing to this day, a testament to the history and stories it witnessed.

    The End of an Era

As times changed, so did shopping habits. The rise of supermarkets led to the closure of many small shops, including Hannie’s beloved store. Although the barrels and firkins that once defined the butter-making business are no longer made, the place is still affectionately referred to as ‘The Cooper’s.’ The legacy of ‘The Cooper’s’ lives on, not just in its physical presence, but in the memories of those who gathered there, shared stories, and forged lifelong connections.

    My mother often spoke about the platform that was across the road from Jim Lynch ‘the Cooper’s. It was in Dan Scanlon’s land, laid down by the stalwart men of Glenagragra. I will quote a line or two from a song written by Paddy Barrett of Turraree in relation to the said platform -;

‘This platform was modelled out in 1928,

By the stalwart men of ‘Gragra’

    In Dan Scanlon’s big estate.

It brought there crowds from Newtownsandes,

    Killeanemore and Glin,

    To tip the light fantastic,

    With Dirreen’s athletic men’.

It appears that some bit of jealously developed between the Dirreen and Glenagragra boys resulting in Jack Feury, Glenagragra and Paddy Barrett, Turraree digging up the platform. Hannie Casey almost had a nervous breakdown because of the feud. There was a platform located to the immediate east of Maurice Higgin’s gate thereafter but it did not last long. Jack Higgins made concrete blocks on the site after that. I remember the block making mechanism very well.

I’m working on the hypothesis  that she was from that area as there were families of the Mulcair’s residing there at that time, also Shaughnessy’s. Patrick Shaughnessy was also a witness at another one of the Mulcair weddings. The registrar didn’t give Catherine’s address, on her marriage certificate (not to mention the scribble) but seeing that she got married in Robertstown church,  Robertstown would be no more than a mile or so from Ballyengland. Eily Hogan, Main St. Glin confirmed to me today Feb 9th, 2023 that Catherine did indeed come from around Borrigone. (The creamery was later burned down over a dispute between the milk suppliers) I think he went to Athea creamery after that.

6.Margaret O’Connor 1870-1951. Margaret emigrated to New York, married Timothy Dillane, born 1869 in Killeaney, Glin, brother of Matthew who was married to her sister Ellen. (see Timothy Dillane above)

Margaret (Peg) Aherne’s father was William Aherne1807-1874 and her mother was Johanna Shine 1810-1907. William Aherne’s father was James Aherne. vii.Thomas O’Connor 1916-1994 who married Margaret Lynch 1929-2019 from Tarbert, Co. Kerry. Their son Tom (Tony) O’Connor is in regular contact with me and has given me much information on his family.

8.James O’Connor 1875-1953, James married Lawlee from Glin, no children.

9.Edward Edmond (Ned) O’Connor 1877-1956. On Sept 11th, 1906 at Athea church, Edward, aged 25 years, a tailor, married Elizabeth Butler aged 33 years, the witnesses being – John & Katie McGrath. The Butler’s lived in Athea, on the same laneway (rear of Griffin’s butcher’s) as Dr. Philip McGrath. Elizabeth’s father was Francis Butler born 1828 and died from pneumonia in Athea on Nov 20th,1883, his wife Ellen Butler present at his death. Francis was a shoemaker by trade and his line of work must have brought him to Athea, from whence he came I have no idea. Francis was married twice, his first wife was Mary Riordan from Athea. Mary lived lived where Mikie McMahon had his butchers stall, formerly Moran’s, Mikie was married to a daughter of Mick Moran from Clash, Athea. Francis’ second wife was Ellen Keane from around Knockanure/Gale bridge area.  Elizabeth was born on Nov 4th, 1879, which would indicate that the age given on her marriage certificate (33 years) is incorrect.  Ellen Butler died from senile decay on Nov 21st, 1923 at Athea, aged 88 years, her daughter Johanna Danaher present at her death. On Sept 26th, 1903 at St. Michael’s church, Limerick city, Johanna Butler, Athea married John Danaher, aged 38 years, a shopkeeper from Athea, son of Maurice Danaher, a deceased farmer, the witnesses being – Michael Riordan, Athea and her sister Elizabeth (Lizzie) Butler. Johanna Butler was born on April 15th, 1867 in Athea to Francis Butler & Ellen Keane. There was a son John Butler born on Oct 4th, 1864 to the same parents which means Francis was married firstly to Mary Riordan and by all accounts they had a family, all of whom must have emigrated. The only family of Riordan’s that I can locate in Athea is a Martin Riordan, his wife Johanna and their son Michael, who must be the Michael Riordan who was a witness to the marriage of Johanna Butler & John Danaher, as above and 1901 Census hereunder. Martin may have been a brother to Francis Butler’s first wife Mary Riordan.

We have Timothy Enright born circa 1800. Two of his children that I know of as follows –

1.Patrick Enright, born circa 1833,  Patrick married  Hanora Scanlon from Dromreask and had the following family of 7, that I know of –

    i. Denis Enright born circa 1868.

ii. Mary Enright. Born June 20th, 1868 at Ballyguiltenane, mother given as Hanora Flynn.

iii. Daniel Enright born on Jan 12th, 1872 who, on Feb 6th, 1906 at the age of 35 years, at Athea church, married Mary Dalton, aged 33 years, daughter of John Dalton, a farmer from Glasha, Athea, the witnesses being Daniel Scanlon and Maggie Lynch, Maggie was my grandaunt. from Glashapullagh, Athea.  Daniel Enright died from Hemiplegia at Dromreask on Jan 30th, 1907, aged 35 years, his sister Johanna Buckley present at his death.  Daniel’s widow Mary Dalton Enright re-married on Feb 16th, 1909 at Athea church to John (Jack George) Griffin, Glenagragra, the witnesses being Edward Stack, Moyvane and Mary Langan, Glasha. Mary Langan being my grandaunt.

John Griffin & Mary Dalton Enright had a son and a daughter as follows –

i.Unnamed Male Griffin b. 17 Aug 1914, Glenagragara, Glin, Co Limerick, d. 17 Aug 1914, Glenagragara, Glin, Co Limerick.

ii.Margaret (Maggie George) Griffin, born on April 9th, 1912 at Glenagragra. On Feb 6th, 1940 at Glin church, Margaret (Maggie George) Griffin aged 27 years, daughter of John Griffin, married John (Jack) Nolan born Dec 25th, 1899, Finnoe,  Ballyhahill, Co. Limerick,  (aged 40 years on marriage cert) son of John Nolan, labourer, the witnesses being Tim (Tadhg) Shine, a blacksmith from Athea and Peggie Dalton, Glasha, Maggie’s 1st cousin. Peggie Dalton and my mother grew up together, both houses in Glasha being in the one yard. Jack Nolan  married into the Glenagragra place, for a short period of time may I add as he had a farm in Lisready, Loughill bought but a dwelling house had yet to be built there. Jack had returned from the US having worked there from 1926-1934 during which time he saved enough money to purchase the said farm in Lisready. Saving money in America at that time couldn’t be easy, in fact it was some feat to accomplish as that was the era of the recession and the banks at that time weren’t the safest places to stash any hard-earned dough. Jack Nolan and his wife Maggie were great friends with my grandparents, Paddy & Babe Langan. In fact, it was the said Jack Nolan that nominated my grandfather Paddy Langan to contest the 1942 Co Council election on behalf of the Labour party to which he was elected. Maggie died March 24th 1990. Her husband Jack Nolan died July 1st 1986

iv.Johanna Enright was born on Sept 7th, 1867. Johanna married Denis Buckley from Rea, Duagh, Co. Kerry, son of Timothy Buckley, the marriage taking place at Glin church on March 2nd, 1905, the witnesses being – John Buckley & Lizzie Scanlon. It is of the belief that following the death of Mary Dalton’s husband Daniel Enright, Buckley attempted to take over the Enright farm. Daniel Enright‘s brother Patrick Enright, hereunder, was away in the ‘bush’ in Australia and had not been seen since he went out there. Apparently, the conditions of the will made by his father outlined that if Patrick couldn’t be contacted in Australia, the farm was to be inherited by Buckley. Having eventually been tracked down Patrick returned home to Dromreask to a land war. A court case ensued in which Patrick won the day. The story has it that during a particular visit by Buckley to Dromreask his horse was shot from beneath him as he was going up the Blaine road. ‘It wasn’t me, says Patrick, because if it was, tisn’t the horse that I’d have shot’. Patrick Enright and his cousin Jack Normile were wrongly accused of the incident, were convicted and served a period of time in prison. On Thursday February 1911 the Enright farmhouse in Dromreask was burned to the ground. The building was found to be on fire at 4am by Denis Buckley who had arisen early to leave for Co. Kerry. Buckley alerted the other occupants who were powerless to put out the blaze, the flames being fanned by a strong southerly wind. Constables from Glin, Sgt Butler and Constable’s, Joyce and Walsh proceeded to the scene at 8am.

    v. Maurice Enright born April 6th, 1871. Mother given as Flynn.

vi. Timothy Enright born April 29th, 1873. Mother given as Flynn.

vii. Patrick Enright born on Feb 24th, 1874 at Ballyguiltenne, who on June 27th, 1912 at the church of the Holy Cross, Charleville, married Anne Maume from Charleville, Co. Cork, daughter of Edward Maume, a bootmaker, the witnesses being Edward Ryan and Mary Roonen. Family from that union 6 as follows –

Nora Enright born ? married Paddy Manning in Shanagolden.

Anne Enright born June 17th, 1914. Anne emigrated to England and married a man by the name of Hyde ??. She came home and died here in the land of her birth.

Johanna Enright born Feb 6th, 1916. Johanna emigrated to England and married a man by the name of Moore.

Pat Enright, born Nov 23rd, 1917 – R.I.P 11-02-1991. Pat married Mary Lynch, Glasha daughter of James Lynch and Hannie O’Grady.

    Ned Enright, born Sept 1st, 1919 – R.I.P. June 3rd 2003. Ned remained single.

Dan Enright, born on Dec 3rd, 1920, R.I.P Dec 1999, all of whom lived in Dromreask. Dan remained single.

Annie Maume Enright was born 1878 and died at Dromreask on September 19th 1959 age 81 years.

Annie Maume’s father was Edward Maume and her mother was Neville, both from Charleville.

PATRICK MULVIHILL (son of Hanora4 Feury and Denis Mulvihill)  was born on 30 Mar 1874 in Aughrim, Moyvane, County Kerry. He died on Dec 17th, 1964 in Glin, aged 90 years, a retired tailor. Patrick married Mary Ellen Gallagher, daughter of Edmond Gallagher and Mary McMahon, on April 29th, 1902 at Glin church, the witnesses being – James Mulvihill & Mary Biggane. She was born on Sep 11th, 1873 in Queenstown, County Cork. She died on Mar 13th, 1943 in Glin, Co. Limerick.

Notes for Patrick Mulvihill: His godparents were William Dillane and Mary Feury. In the 1901 Census of Ireland, Patrick was a tailor in Labasheeda, Co. Clare, however by 1911 he was married to Mary Ellen Gallagher and was living in Glin, Co. Limerick and also working as a tailor. They had nine children (all boys), three died at birth or very young. Many of these are buried near Labasheeda, most likely at Kilkerin, where there is a small church, already in ruins by 1837. This church has a burial-ground only used for the interment of children. By 1911 six children were alive, but two of the boys, who had been born between 1902 and 1911 had already died. At this time, Edward Gallagher, Mary’s father was living with the family in Glin.

Notes for Mary Ellen Gallagher: In the 1911 Census of Ireland ( Co. Limerick), Mary’s age is given as 36 years, this does not agree with the age in the Kilfergus Burial Register, although the tombstone inscription agrees with the census. Mary’s place of birth in the 1911 census is given as Co. Cork, while her father’s place of birth is given as Co. Limerick. She had siblings born in Glin and one sibling born in England.

The Normile family lived in Killeaney, I think Dan ‘Mikeen’ Culhane got the place, whether he bought it or inherited it I’m not sure. There are two variations of the surname used, ie, Normoyle and Normile. On Feb 3rd, 1871 at Murher, (Moyvane), Patrick Normoyle aged 21 years, of Killeaney, Glin, son of John Normoyle farmer, married Ellen Stack, aged 17 years from Leitrim Middle, daughter of John Stack farmer &  Mary Walshe, the witnesses being – John Stack & Patt Barrett.

A daughter, Mary Normile, was born on Jan 26th, 1874.

They had a son Michael Normile born on Sept 6th, 1876.

A son Francis (Frank) Normoyle was born on Feb 1st, 1887.

A son William Normile who was born on Aug 17th, 1897.  On Feb 26th, 1933, at Ardagh church William married Margaret Ann Dillane from Glenastar, Ardagh, daughter of farmer Thomas Dillane 1862-1910, the witnesses being – Edward Dore & Ellie Dillane. William married into the Dillane place.

Family from that union, 1 as follows:

    Mary Normoyle born circa 1935.

William Normoyle died on April 20th, 1941 at the County Infirmary Limerick, aged 40 years from diabetes, 5 days certified.

Margaret Normoyle died a widow on Nov 12th, 1944 at the County Home, Newcastle West from a pernicious hernia syncope, aged 42 years.

Following the deaths of her parents, Mary’s uncle, Frank Normile and his wife Bridie Forde, took Mary into their home in Knocknagorna, Athea. Frank Normile & Bridie Forde were married on March 17th, 1943 at Athea church, the witnesses being – James Normile & Mary Ita Kiely. Frank given as a widower. Bridie’s address given as Knocknagorna, daughter of William Forde, Rooskagh East, Athea. Frank Normile’s first marriage was on March 4th, 1930 at Ballyhahill church to Mary Anne King from Clounleharde, daughter of farmer, Patrick King, the witnesses being – Dan Enright & Bridget King. Mary died on Jan 27th, 1941, at the County Infirmary, Limerick, from an Ovarian Cyst, aged 47 years. Mary King’s father, Patrick King, son of Jeremiah King was married on Feb 22nd 1887 at Tarbert church to Mary O’Connor from Duncaha, Tarbert, daughter of farmer, John O’Connor, the witnesses being – John O’Connor & Patrick Gearin, both parents were alive.

Mary Normile emigrated to England where she met her future husband, Pat Brosnan from Dromada, Lyreacrompane, Co. Kerry. They both returned to Knocknagorna where they lived out their lives and reared their family of one son and three daughters. Pat was a tremendous singer, poet, historian and ballad writer and won numerous competitions over the years. With Pat’s permission, I had the good fortune to record one of those ballads, The Lights of Carrickerry back in 2002 on a country album. I arranged the music from ballad to country quickstep and had a huge success with it. Pat & Mary were great friends of mine.

Mary Brosnan nee Normoyle died on Nov 12th, 2009.

Pat Brosnan died on Thursday Jan 8th, 2015.

BOOK – The Kerry Chain – The Limerick Link (Ireland to Renfrew County, Ontario)

    By Carol Bennett-McCuaig

This edition published by Global Heritage Press, Carleton Place, 2022
Originally published by Juniper Books Ltd, Renfrew, 2003
Between the years 1823 and 1875 a large number of families from Ireland’s County Kerry and County Limerick, many of them inter-related, arrived in Renfrew County, Ontario. Many of them had first lived in the counties of Lanark and Carleton to the south, before making the move to join compatriots and relatives in the newly opened townships. These chain migrations involved both Catholics and Protestants. This book documents that migration with much detail about individuals and families. While the author appears to have been the first to uncover the Kerry chain, it has never been any secret that many of the people who settled in the Mount St Patrick area were from West Limerick. Carol McCuaig has found that many of the surnames are repeated in both the North Kerry and West Limerick groups, who lived within a short distance of each other in Ireland. This book will be of interest to both the family historian and those engaged in Irish immigration studies.     More information including Index

With Pat’s permission, I  recorded one of those ballads namely, The Lights of Carrickerry back in 2002 on my country album, Life To Go. I arranged the music from ballad to country quickstep and had a huge success with it. Pat & Mary were great friends of mine.

She died on 24 Feb 1947 in Clounleharde, Ballyhahill County Limerick, aged 54 years. On April 25th, 1931, Catherine, aged 38 years, married Michael (Mick) Egan, aged 45 years, from Clounleharde, son of John Egan, a deceased farmer, the witnesses being – Thomas Egan & Margaret Kelly. Michael Egan was born on April 9th, 1886, to John Egan and Margaret Dillane. Margaret was the daughter of Thomas Dillane, Kinard, Glin.

This part of Clounleharde was known locally as ‘Bricktown’ because of the lane of brick houses that had been built here in days gone by, by the landlord Dixon to accommodate his gamekeepers. A two-storied brick house was situated directly across the road from these lanes of houses, and it was in this house Mick Egan lived. During this time the rear part of the brick house was used to accommodate some of the teachers at nearby Clounleharde National school. He house had to be demolished as it was deemed unsafe following a fire.  On July 3rd, 1967, Clounleharde School closed its doors for the final time and the thirty-six pupils who attended there were taken by bus to join Ballyhahill National School.

Mick & Catherine had a shop in one of the lane of house’s which was demolished circa 1960 to make way for their new abode which is situated right next to the cross-roads.

Mick Egan & Catherine Dillane had one daughter Margaret (Peggy) Egan. Peggy married JIM (JIMMY ‘LIZ’) ENRIGHT, Clounleharde. Jimmy died on February 3rd, 2005. His wife Peggy died July 19th, 2005.

As far as I know all the lanes of brick houses are now demolished. Some of the tenants of those houses back then were as follows – Stephen O’Sullivan. Next to Stephen lived Paddy O’Sullivan. A Mrs. O’Connell nee O’Shaughnessy lived in the house before Paddy. Harry Riordan from Dirreen is the present owner. Martin Dillane hereunder lived in one of them as well before he built a new house next to the school.

My thanks to Paddy Faley, Glenbawn, for supplying me with some of the above information.

    2. LIAM RUADH2 DILLANE (?1 Dillane.) was born circa 1750 in Kinard Glin County Limerick. He died after 1820 in Kinard Glin County Limerick.

    Notes for Liam Ruadh Dillane:

He was the great uncle to Mary King’s, William Dillane. He was known as ‘ fear mor leabhar agus togha scolaire ‘. ( a great man for books and the best of scholars) The Glin Irish Poet Sean Ban Aerach O’ Flanagain lived at Kinard with him in his later years. Sean was born in 1740 and died in 1820. He is buried in Kilfergus cemetery in the same grave as my ancestor Tom ‘Captain Steele’ Langan of 1798 notoriety. Liam worked in the castle library. One day when he was putting his books in order Giobuineach said to him “I would prefer a basket of potatoes to them”. Liam quietly replied, “A pig would be in one mind with you John.” From the letters of Thomas F Culhane.

Liam Ruadh2 Dillane had the following child:

    i. THOMAS3 DILLANE. (Liam Ruadh2 Dillane, ?1 Dillane.) Thomas was married MARGARET MULVIHILL.

Thomas Dillane and Margaret Mulvihill had the following child:

    i. MARY4 DILLANE (Thomas3 Dillane, Liam Ruadh2 Dillane, ?1 Dillane) was born in 1803 in Kinard, Glin, Co. Limerick . She died on 19 Mar 1890 in Kinard, Glin aged 87 years. She married John (Jack) Hogan about 1836 in Chapel of Glin, Glin County Limerick. He married Catherine Mulcare/Mulcair, daughter of Owen Mulcair and Bridget Costello, on 10 Feb 1872 at Robertstown, church, Borrigone, Askeaton, Co. Limerick, the witnesses being – Patrick Shaughnessy & John O’Brien. She was born on 13 Nov 1844 in Ireland. I’m almost certain Catherine was born at Ballyengland, Askeaton, Co. Limerick. Catherine died on Jun 16th, 1916 at Kinard, Glin, her widower John Hogan present at her death.. (George Langan)
