Michael Egan was born on April 9th, 1886, to John Egan, and Margaret Dillane, Clounleharde. Margaret was the daughter of Thomas Dillane, Kinard, Glin. On April 25th, 1931, Michael Egan, aged 45 years, son of John Egan, a deceased farmer, married CATHERINE DILLANE, aged 38 years, born on 18 Nov 1893 in Kinard, Glin Co. Limerick, the witnesses being – Thomas Egan & Margaret Kelly. Catherine died on 24 Feb 1947 in Clounleharde, Ballyhahill County Limerick, aged 54 years.

This part of Clounleharde was known locally as ‘Bricktown’ because of the lane of brick houses that had been built here in days gone by, by the landlord Dixon to accommodate his gamekeepers. A two-storied brick house was situated directly across the road from these lanes of houses, and it was in this house Mick Egan lived. During this time the rear part of the brick house was used to accommodate some of the teachers at nearby Clounleharde National school. He house had to be demolished as it was deemed unsafe following a fire.  On July 3rd, 1967, Clounleharde School closed its doors for the final time and the thirty-six pupils who attended there were taken by bus to join Ballyhahill National School.

Mick & Catherine had a shop in one of the lane of house’s which was demolished circa 1960 to make way for their new abode which is situated right next to the cross-roads.

Mick Egan & Catherine Dillane had one daughter Margaret (Peggy) Egan. Peggy married JIM (JIMMY ‘LIZ’) ENRIGHT, Clounleharde. Jimmy died on February 3rd, 2005. His wife Peggy died July 19th, 2005.

As far as I know all the lanes of brick houses are now demolished. Some of the tenants of those houses back then were as follows – Stephen O’Sullivan. Next to Stephen lived Paddy O’Sullivan. A Mrs. O’Connell nee O’Shaughnessy lived in the house before Paddy. Harry Riordan from Dirreen is the present owner. Martin Dillane hereunder lived in one of them as well before he built a new house next to the school.

My thanks to Paddy Faley, Glenbawn, for supplying me with some of the above information.

    More on the Enright Family.

A Margaret Hudson, was born on Feb 13th, 1884 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 16 Feb 1884 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 26 Aug 1962. She was buried in Athea Cemetery, Co. Limerick.

Margaret married James (Jim) ENRIGHT on Nov 16th, 1912 at Listowel church, the witnesses being – Pat Leahy, Carruaragh and Hannie Hudson. James was the son of John Enright and Elizabeth Leahy  who were married on Feb 8th, 1877 at Newtownsandes church, Elizabeth being the daughter of James Leahy, Carruaragh, the witnesses being – John Costello and Margaret Enright. John Enright’s father was James Enright who in 1852 was the holder of 58 acres under the landlord Samuel A. Dixon. James died on Jan 29th, 1880 at Clounleharde, aged 69 years, his son John Enright present at his death James (Jim) Enright died on  Oct 23rd, 1945 at Glenbawn, his son Jim Enright present at his death. Elizabeth came frome Carrauragh, which I believe is back beyond the new graveyard at Gale bridge on the Listowel road. In 1840 all the occupiers of Glenbawn were tenants-at-will, ie they could be all evicted without notice. The soil was described for the most part as heathery bog with some coarse pasture with a little arable producing oats and potatoes. About half the townland was fenced and reclaimed. Jim farmed in Glenbawn in Ballyhahill, Co. Limerick. His father John Enright must have died young as we see in the 1901 census his widow Elizabeth (Liz) is head of the family. In fact, John Enright died at Clounleharde on Dec 7th, 1891, aged 36 years, his daughter Maggie Enright present at his death.

viii. MARTIN DILLANE was born on 27 Nov 1895 in Kinard, Glin Co. Limerick. Martin, like his father before him, was a tailor and lived in Clounleharde, Ballyhahill. (Next to the school) I knew him well. I drew home the turf for him from Spa Hill bog back in 1970. On April 29th, 1930 at Ballyhahill church, Martin married Ellen (Nell) Enright, daughter of Mick ‘The Bram’ Enright, the witnesses being – John Dillane & Bridget Quinn. Ellen died in 1988 aged 90 years. Martin and Ellen had the following family of 5 –

i.Martin (Mar) Dillane who along with his 4-year-old son Martin, were fatally injured in a road traffic accident in 1984 in Co. Longford. It is of the belief that a drunk driver ran into them.

ii.John Joe Dillane N.T. emigrated to Zimbabwe where he settled down in Harare and married a native from there. They had a daughter Tracey Dillane who married Chippie Roberts who was a rugby player with Zimbabwe. Chippie & Tracey visited Clounleharde when the Zimbabwe rugby team toured Ireland over 30 years ago, I I’m almost sure it was 1991. John returned to Ireland as is now (Dec 30th, 2022) living in Portlaoise.

iii.Kathleen Dillane married Jim Donegan and they live in Dublin.

iv. Michael Dillane who is nearing the 92-age bracket (Dec 30th, 2022), is married and living in Listowel, Co. Kerry.

v.Paul Dillane emigrated to the U.S. and went to his eternal reward a good number of years ago.

Mick ‘The Bram’ Enright, on his return from the U.S. bought the original house where Martin & his wife lived (which was one of the brick houses) from a family of the O’Callaghan’s who emigrated to the U.S.A. Martin, later built a new bungalow close to the schoolhouse.

Mick ‘The Bram’ Enright was born at Clounleharde on Sept 27th, 1867, son of John Enright & Margaret Ahern. On Jan 20th, 1889 at Ballyhahill church, Mick who was aged 22 years, married Catherine Walsh, Clounleharde, daughter of labourer John Walsh, the witnesses being – Thomas & Bridget Enright.  Following their marriage, Mick and his wife went to live in Knockdown in the cottage by the side of the road where Ned O’Shaughnessy lived in my time. Mick ‘The Bram’ had a twin sister, Johanna Enright who died from the fever on July 28th, 1876, aged 8 years.

Mick had a family of 6 as follows, all whom emigrated to the U.S. They were – Paddy, Jack, Mick, Catherine, Bridget and Ellen Enright.

Mick’s wife Catherine was born on Sept 13th. 1867 and died at Clounleharde from heart disease on Sept 18th, 1904, aged 37 years. Mick worked as an engine driver at the branch of the Cork and Kerry creamery in Crough, Turraree. After the creamery was burned down Mick sold his house to Con O’Shaughnessy and along with his youngest daughter Ellen, followed the rest of the family on the emigrant ship to the U.S. As alluded to above, on his return from the U.S. Mick bought the O’Callaghan home in Clounleharde. Ellen had returned with him and subsequently married Martin Dillane.  (George Langan & Paddy Faley)

He married Elizabeth Sarah Hobson, daughter of Robert Hobson and Mary Hannah Drayton, on 18 Oct 1919 in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. She was born on 08 Dec 1896 in Georgetown, QLD.Australia. She died on 05 Apr 1983 in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. Daniel Dillon & Elizabeth Sarah Hobson were the grandparents of Mary  King whom I’m so indebted to for providing me with the majority of the information in this blog.

    Notes for Daniel Dillon:

When I was growing-up in Cairns, my grandparents lived at 20 Kenny Street in Cairns. My grandfather used to come home from the hotel and teach me these pub songs, which my father and he had some very strong words over. Grandfather Dillon had a wonderful singing voice, he sung with a few friends at the hotel. The owner of the hotel would give them free beer, because when they were singing men would stay at that hotel. When he came from the hotel, he would often bring a glass jar of beer, he added sultanas to the beer, so it would go flat. Then he buried the jar in the cool sand under the house.

He was an excellent fisherman, who used to make his own fishing nets. He taught me to mend fishing nets. Grandfather Dillon hated cleaning cat fish, so he swapped them for mangoes with Mr Ah Hing, who lived across the road. He used to collect mangrove timber for the wood stove, as this timber was the best wood for cooking. On the return boat trip with the mangrove wood, if the wind was blowing from the south, he would use a small mangrove tree as a sail. As they grew older his sons tried to avoid fishing with him, as he would stay in the boat and let the boys grab the net.

When I was young he used to chase the ibises away from the chicken yard by using a shanghai, with which he used to land stones close to the birds. One day Dennis asked if he would show him how to do it. In very strong language, he told Dennis what he thought of that idea. However he taught me how to use it. Daniel Dillon worked on the waterfront on the Cairns Wharves. In the early days the men to work were selected by a few men. The method of selection was that near Lake Street, the person doing the selection would climb a ladder to stand above the men and he would indicate, who was to work that day. The men used to call this the ” Bull Pen”. Often the way you tried to make sure that you were selected was to arrange with the barman at the Oceania Hotel, to give the selectors a free drink and tell him, which waterside worker had paid for the drink. He also worked for one season at Babinda Sugar Mill. He is buried in Cairns Cemetery No. A 236. (Mary King).

    Notes for Elizabeth Sarah Hobson:

Grandma Dillon was a very special lady. I used to often visit her, on the mornings, when she and her neighbour shared morning tea. She was a brilliant cook. She was an excellent horsewoman, who rode a horse to dances. Her first job was as a parlour maid at the Atherton Hotel in Cairns. It was here she met my grandfather. She is buried in No. 429 Forest View Memorial Park. (Mary King)

Daniel Dillon and Elizabeth Sarah Hobson had the following children:

    i. DANIEL FRANCIS7 DILLON was born on 20 Sep 1920 in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. He died on 25 May 2006 in Campbelltown, New South Wales, Australia. He married Margaret Christopher, daughter of Thomas Christopher and Florence Mary Dunn, on 09 May 1953 in Sans Souci, New South Wales, Australia. She was born on 11 Mar 1928 in Glebe, Sydney New South Wales Australia.

    Notes for Daniel Francis Dillon:

Daniel Francis Dillon grew up in Cairns. The family lived at Dutton and Kenny Streets. He attended the Cairns Boys State Primary School. He enjoyed the Boy Scouts, when he was young. His younger brothers Shorty and Gordon enjoyed short-sheeting his bed often. He didn’t like horses, especially after his brothers Shorty and Gordon put him on the family horse “Pet”. The horse took a sharp turn, but Danny did not follow. The only person this horse obeyed was his youngest sister Olive. He enlisted on the 11 August 1943 and was discharged 7 February 1946. He served as a Leading Aircraft man At Horn island. His first job was delivering papers in the mornings. Most of what he earned was given to his mother. He worked at the mill, Samuel Allen’s Warehouse and later as a labourer on the waterfront in Cairns, Brisbane and Sydney. He was a very good greyhound trainer, who also trained the Neighbours’ dogs, but he would not train the family’s dogs.

Danny was a good dancer, who always dressed very smartly. The suits that he wore reminded his younger siblings of the clothes that a doctor would wear, so they called him ” the Doc “. His brothers Shorty (Allen) and foggy ( Gordon) would borrow his clothes without his permission. His mother warned them to get the clothes back before Danny came home. Often they did not do this and he caught them in his clothes. On time he was so annoyed about this he chased them with a bayonet. Gordon said to Shorty, “You go one way, I will go the other way, so he doesn’t catch both of us”. (Mary King)

ii. ALLEN WILLIAM7 DILLON was born on 25 May 1922 in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. He died on 02 Feb 1984 in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. He married (1) ESMA MAUREEN DOYLE, daughter of Bailey Doyle and Isabel May Barrett, on 08 Jul 1945 in Babinda, Queensland, Australia. She was born on 22 Dec 1924 in Babinda, Queensland, Australia. She died on 09 Jan 1958 in Cairns, Queensland, Australia.

He married (2) MAVIS MARY COLLETON on 23 May 1960 in Cairns, Queensland,Australia. She was born on 26 Dec 1923 in Babinda, Queensland, Australia. She died on 30 May 1980 in Cairns, Queensland, Australia.

    Notes for Allen William Dillon:

My father grew up in Cairns. Dad and his brother Gordon built a merry-go-round, which they let others ride for a bottle, a turn. They returned the bottles to the shops for a refund. Their sister Edna used to take a bottle from their pile of bottles, so she could have a free ride. Dad and Uncle Gordon had the job of taking food to their grandfather Thomas Fury Dillon, when he worked as caretaker at the Cairns Show Grounds. Before they arrived at their destination, the boys would eat what they liked on the plate of food.

One day Uncle Gordon and Dad had taken their sister Lorna with them in the rowing boat. Grandma had to send them back for her, as they had left her in the, boat. Grandma used to send the boys to the Presbyterian Sunday School inCairns. She gave each boy a penny for the plate at church. Dad and Uncle Gordon would not go to Sunday School, so they could spend the penny. Dad and Uncle Gordon used to borrow their brother Daniel’s clothes. Uncle Danny always dressed smartly. Their mother told Dad and Uncle Gordon that they had tobe back before Danny, so Danny didn’t find out they were borrowing his clothes.

Uncle Danny saw them wearing his clothes and chased them with a bayonet. Uncle Gordon said to Dad, “You run one way and I’ll run the other way, so he doesn’t get both of us.”

He is buried with his son.

    He served with C.M.F. from 30 September 1941 – 1 July 1943.

He was a member of Australian Imperial Forces , from 2 July 1943 to 18 October 1945. He was Corporal Dillon a Cook with H.Q. A.N.G.A.U. He would have arrived in Papua / New Guinea about 15 February 1942. Dad owned a boat called the “Nancy”. He was an excellent swimmer, who used to dive with his divers looking trohcus shells. He employed South Sea Islanders, One such Islander was Joe Carava. After the war, because a market for this no longer existed, he became a cook. He cooked for Babinda Hospital. Later when we were growing-up in Cairns, he worked as a cook on the Sugar Lighters including the Wortana. Many of the watersiders were often hungry, especiallywhen work was scarce, so Dad put aside food in the fridge for them to eat, while working on the boat that Dad was employed as a cook. Dad stopped doing this when two waterside workers, Forsythe and Doug Shullet helped themselves to the food prepared for the crew. He left around 19 63, when the Sugar Lighters were no longer used because of bulk handling of sugar at Cairns. He then worked as a cook on Iron Ore Carriers carrying iron ore from Yampi Sound in Western Australia to Newcastle in New South Wales. One of the boats, which he worked on was the Lake Barrine. Dad and Mum were living at Babinda for a time. Dad was a cook at the Babinda Hospital. They moved to White Rock, south of Cairns. However Mum did not like the isolation, when Dad was away, so we moved to Bunda Street, Cairns close to Dad’s family.

    Notes for Esma Maureen Doyle:

Esma, my mother, first worked in Babinda for Mr. & Mrs Kelly. He was a sugar chemist at the mill. She was a housemaid. When the family was evacuated at the start of World War Two to Brisbane, She was employed at a fruit shop near the southern side of the Story Bridge. When they returned to Babinda she enlisted in the Australian Women’s Land Army.

At a meeting held in the Gresham hotel Dublin on 9th Feb 1922 Alderman Michael Staines TD, a native of Newport, Co. Mayo was proposed as the first Commissioner of the Irish Republic police force known as the Civic Guards. The new force was initially armed, but was reorganised after the Kildare Mutiny as an unarmed force and renamed An Garda Siochana. Staines resigned his role as Commissioner following the mutiny and was replaced by General Eoin O’Duffy. Duffy, who was a native of Carrickaduff, Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan served as Commissioner from September 1922 to February 1933.

On June 14th 1923 the first Gardai were allocated to the village of Athea. They were accommodated in a section of a building which was rented from a Dr. Maurice  Rice Danagher, a native of Athea but who was living in Thomaly On-Teess, England at the time.

On November 7th 1924  Patrick T. Liston & Co, Solicitors, Rathkeale wrote to the Chief Superintendent, Phoenix Park advising him that these premises were now offered for sale by public auction and that the Gardai would have to vacate the premises on getting three months notice.

In a letter dated Jan 7th 1925 from the Secretary Dept of Justice to the Commissioner with regard to the provision of accommodation for the Garda Siochana at Athea it was stated therein that while Mr. Danagher would prefer to regain possession of the entire building for business and residential purposes he was prepared, with a view to settlement, to let the western portion of the building as a Garda Station until more suitable accommodation could be found and that the necessary repairs should be carried out to the portion of the building in question. The repairs were carried out and the new Garda Station was occupied on February 6th 1925 with conditions of tenure as follows -:

Premises :                 The western portion of the landlord’s house at Athea.

Lesser :                     Maurice Rice Danaher, Athea, Co. Limerick, Esquire.

    Rent :                        £40 per annum.

    Tenure :                    Yearly from 6th February 1925.

    Liability for

Rates & Taxes :        Landlord liable.

    Maintenance :           Landlord liable.

On Oct 2nd 1925 Mrs. Ellen Connell, Bridge House, Athea wrote to  the Deputy Commissioner, Eamonn Coogan offering portion of her house to be used as a Garda station.. Mrs. O’Connell concluded her letter as follows : –

‘’I will be satisfied to lease the portion mentioned for a period of 10 years, ten years, or less or more for lump sum to be agreed on.

Trusting to hear from you at your earliest convenience.

                                                                                 I beg to remain,

                                                                             Yours Sincerely,   Ellen O’Connell.’’

Following an inspection by a Mr. Brophy from the Board of Works Mrs. O’Connell’s house was deemed not suitable. It was reported as follows – ‘’the matter was fully considered and in view of the impracticability of providing suitable married accommodation in the premises your offer could not in the circumstances be accepted.’’ Not satisfied with the outcome Mrs. O’Connell called personally to the Garda Depot on the first week of July 1927 to renew her offer. She was now willing to lease the entire premises, including the shop portion thereof for the purpose of a barrack. Once again her offer was turned down.

Meanwhile, on July 9th 1927 Mr. Patrick Lynch, Main St, Athea threw his hat in the ring offering his house to be used as a barrack for Athea. Patrick Lynch I might mention was a brother to James Lynch, Glosha. Patrick spent many years working in the U.S., came home and opened a shop next door to Dan Liston’s public house, (now J.P. Collins’s R.I.P.) Tommy Danaher bought the place afterwards and he subsequently sold it on to the Liston family.

Mrs. O’Connell wasn’t a bit satisfied with the whole set up. She made her feelings known in a letter dated Aug 9th 1927 to a guard Murphy, Phoenix Park, Dublin, that she was of the opinion that her enemies were trying to weave a net around her.(somebody had reported to the authorities that the floods from the Gale river were entering her house) She made it clear that the flood only entered her house on one occasion,(a cloud burst) when guard Rousome and his wife lived with her. She also stated that a day or two before she got back from Dublin the Sgt had cleverly arranged the moving of guard Dunne and his wife from her house to Mr. Danaher’s public house. She also mentioned that the burning of her house in 1913 was not of her making but of her very great misfortune and she thanked her P.P. Canon Cregan for his influence into sorting out of her mishap.

On Aug 3rd 1928 Ellen O’Connell and Patrick Lynch were both informed that their respective building’s were deemed to be unsuitable for the purpose of a Garda barracks. It was stated that no amount of alterations would make Mrs. O’Connell’s premises suitable. In the case of Patrick Lynch it was stated that the house consisted of five apartments. There were no out-offices and Lynch was not willing to provide any and was not willing to make any alterations in the house itself. The house was too small and there was no married accommodation available either.

It was also mentioned that there was a site now available in the village for the building of a new barracks.

On Sept 24th 1928 Sgt John Sheehy made the following report in relation to Athea Gda Station :

‘’I respectfully beg to state that the out-office accommodation for single men at this station consists of a turf-shed of about 8’  –  12’ and a back yard 30’  –  7’.

The sanitary arrangement consists of a lavatory with a pipe connected to the sewer which when flushed with water drawn in buckets empties itself into the river.

This lavatory is situated in an adjoining yard the property of the landlord, Maurice Danaher and is about 40 yds from the station and is often used by the public as well as the men at the station.

There is no married quarters at this station or no sanitary arrangements for same’’.

Moving on to November 7th 1930 we have a letter written by Eamon Ambrose P.C., Athea to Gen E. O’Duffy, Gda Depot. Eamon (Ned) was the Athea correspondent for the Kerryman newspaper at the time and was well known for his panache with the pen. He was married to a schoolteacher and they lived next to the old post-office on the Abbeyfeale Road which  later became John Joe O’Connor’s drapery store.

The letter went as follows :

    A Chara,

It is with considerable diffidence I venture to communicate with you over a matter, which is altogether outside my sphere as a private citizen, and which in addition, is one that should only be the concern of the Garda Authorities themselves. Naturally, the erection of a barracks for the rank and file of the Garda, either in Athea or elsewhere, as well as the selection of suitable sites for same, are matters which should be left solely to the discretion and judgement of those responsible for police administration. Advice or suggestions proffered from outside sources, however well meaning, are to be deprecated, in such instances, especially when they are unsolicited. It is with profound reluctance, therefore, that I take the liberty of addressing you relative to the proposed sites for a Garda barracks at Athea, the building of which, has, I understand, been in contemplation for some time past.

One of those sites, which happens to be adjacent to the local post office, has, I believe, been provisionally selected a considerable time back, as a suitable place on which to erect the proposed barrack. Very recently, however, it appears that a Mr. Thomas O’Connor has offered an alternative site in a field at the eastern end of the village, in the near vicinity of the local creamery, and within the past few days the proffered plot has been mapped and inspected by an official acting on behalf of the police authorities. There are certain diverse features, however,  connected with both sites, which impel me to pen this letter for the purpose of rendering the Garda Authorities cognisant of certain important facts before they make a definite selection.

The site offered by Mr. O’Connor, is situated in close proximity to the local creamery, and during the Summer and Autumn months, as a result of droppings from milk-carts, the atmosphere in the neighbourhood is usually pervaded with a most unpleasant and unhealthy effluvia. So pronounced is this odour during the periods referred to, that Mr. O’Connor, whose premises are adjacent, has repeatedly stated , that unless some steps are taken to remedy or abate the nuisance, he and his family will be obliged to seek a change of residence. Then, the ground on which it is proposed to build a barrack, is extremely low and damp, with an unstable and shifting subsoil of peat and marl on which it would be impossible to erect lasting foundations unless the architect would be prepared to incur the additional expense of building on piles.

Another serious objection to this site as a location for a barrack, arises from the fact that during the milk season, ingress and egress to and from the building, would be rendered extremely difficult by the rows of milk-carts awaiting their turn to enter the creamery yard. From April to November, so great is the traffic at this point, owing to the enormous number of carts converging on and emerging from the creamery yard, that the Garda often experience a difficulty in regulating it.

On the other hand, the site originally selected, which adjoins the local post office, has everything to recommend it, and it is the considered opinion of members of the Athea Towns Improvement Committee, of which body I happen to be Hon. Secretary, that a more ideal place for the erection of a barrack, is not to be found in the village. It stands on rising ground, on a firm and stable surface, in a healthy environment, while its proximity to the river and main sewer would render perfect and thorough sanitation possible. Athea is supplied by water by gravitation, and as the main pipe runs past the suggested site, a copious supply of pure water could easily be installed within the new building. It is important to note also, that this part of the village may be described as its business centre, and it is here – at the eastern end –  that most of the business houses, licensed and otherwise, are situated. A Garda barrack erected on this site, would be only about 25 of 30 yards from the Cross, at which point all traffic between the towns of Glin, Abbeyfeale, Listowel and Newcastle West, would be easily under police observation.

Apart from all these considerations, however, there are other factors connected with the claim of this particular site for consideration, which should determine the Police Authorities to accord it approval before all others. The owner, Mr. D. W. Hurley, has been a staunch and consistent supporter of the Government ever since its formation. He has been a strong and influential advocate of its administration, in this area, at a time when it required considerable  courage to be so , and when the Garda were first established here , some years ago, it was in a great measure due to the influence which he exercises in the district, that these young officers were able to function. Personally, I hold no brief for Mr. Hurley, nor neither am I imbued with either animus or prejudice against Mr. O’Connor, but speaking on behalf of the principal residents of Athea. I consider it only bare justice to the former, that those who are charged with the selection of a site for the erection of a barrack at Athea, should be placed in possession of the foregoing facts.

                                                                                                       Eamon Ambrose P.C.

Following inspections by the local assistant architect the site offered by Mr. Denis Hurley was deemed to be the most suitable and negotiations got under way for its acquisition. By Oct 17th 1931 several tenders had been received and on Nov 2nd 1931 the Board of Works placed a contract with Mr. G. Downes, Hospital, Knocklong, Co. Limerick for provision of a Garda barracks for Athea.

In January 1932 Tommeen (Jacky) O’Sullivan, Dirreen secured the contract of supplying the stones from Dirreen quarry for the construction of the barrack. (see also Athea Parish Journal 1992-93 p158-9.)

Feb 27th, 1932 – Work was proceeding slowly. Two stone masons were employed and the foundation was laid. Three labourers were also employed at the work.

March 31st 1932 –  Good progress was now being made.  Five stone masons were employed and the walls were up to five feet.

May 3rd 1932 –  Construction proceeding rapidly. Walls completed and ready for roofing.

    November 15th 1932  – New Barracks occupied.

I have a marriage on March 5th, 1889 at Glin church of a farmer’s daughter Johanna Barrett, aged 33 years, daughter of Patrick Barrett 1811-1897 & Margaret Barrett, Turraree to Thomas Ruddle, farmer’s son, aged 30 years, son of Andrew Ruddle, Turraree, the witnesses being – Denis Mulcair & Mary Enright.  It is of the belief that Johanna Barrett was a niece to Thomas Barrett 1819-1894 as in blog on Barrett’s of Templeathea. So, that being the case, it’s quite probable that Johanna’s father Patrick Barrett, was the Patrick in Dysart, who may have moved to Turraree at some stage or other, maybe to work with his brother Thomas. Patrick Barrett died a widower on March 11th, 1897 at Turraree, aged 87 years, Margaret Ruddle, Turraree present at his death. Margaret Ruddle was Margaret Enright who was married to David Ruddle, Turraree. Margaret died on May 4th, 1899 at Turraree aged 41 years, her husband David Ruddle present at her death.

Sonny’s 2nd marriage to Margaret Peg (Maggie) Cummane, a sister to John Cummane, The Lodge, Knockdown.

ii.Mary Catherine Ruddle (daughter of Thomas Ruddle & Johannah Barrett) born on May 20th, 1891 at Turraree. Mary married Jim McNamara from Ballygoughlin, Glin, Co. Limerick. It is of the belief that Jim died in a public house in Glin while dancing a polka set.
